Fastest Disto at this time = ?

You cna modify the boot options before the LiveCD kicks in... when you get to the splash screen, instead of waiting 30 seconds for the timer to count down or hitting Enter to launch the OS, you can modify the parameters by pressing F6 (I think) and then specifying your preferred desktop resolution using the "res=1280x1024" parameter.

Here's a list of various parameters you can pass... some of the might help with the other issues you've been having:

http://wiki.sabayonlinux.org/index....ers_ands_workarounds_for_problematic_Hardware

The only issue I had with Sabayon was that the majority of the coding and bug fixing seemed to be done by the one guy. They've got a pretty friendly forum though... it's just not as big as distros like Ubuntu.

Using Sabayon over Arch as a daily OS is like using a JCB over a spoon as a daily kitchen utensil- i.e. total overkill.

Get Arch and just add the stuff you need- it'll be way better in the long run.

Gentoo is the fastest, but unless you are really good or fancy spending a lifetime compiling things, I think Arch is a better comprimise. It's on my desktop at home, and will be going on my work lappy once I get my new WD Passport courtesy of my company :)

I will have a peek at both those options later on. The install went fine however, and its currently running at 1024x768 on that system, so Im ok there. Found a few bugs, but nothign im overly concerned about, and its not on a main PC as that PC Im really only experimenting with for the time being.

Overkill? in what way?
In the same way that people wanting to use Vista when XP does the exact same thing overkill?

I did use Gentoo a while back, but for the last few years I have not touched linux much at all and so my linux knowledge has pretty much vanished but I doubt it will take too long to get back into the swing once I get into it again.

Thanks .walls.

My lack of linux was half caused my Mandrake, but half enhanced too!

Knowing that Mandrakes drake tools could do anythign I needed it to, it allowed me to be a little more risky with my tests and messin' abaht!

Trouble is that the tools were often so good, that I ended up wrecking the system and not truly learning a thing cos I was more often using the tools.

Kind of anyway.

Yeah - I know what that's like... I started on SuSE (before it was OpenSuSE) and had YaST and all the funk3h tools that come with the distro. Once I had got to grips with the OS in general, I jumped ship a few times. Now my current distro of choice is Arch - although, I have been meaning to try out Sabayon for a while...

I did have Gentoo on one of my boxes, but I needed to put XP on something in a hurry at one point and have never gotten round to putting it back on (p3 450 with 384 MB ram - takes forever to install gentoo on this hardware!!) To make matters worse, I've since zeroed the drive and it's been sitting idle since!

Because last time I checked, Sabayon is Gentoo, but with an absolute ton of pre- installed stuff in there, most of it unneccaserry.

im giving fedora another go this time to see if it has improved. i remember being prompted to install some security feature i didnt want the last time i tried it (i believe it forced it on the system/user to install), and i swear it bogged down the system, i cant quite remember what it is called. failing this im gonna try zenwalk. :D
