Fastest Drive for under £50?

The only single platter drives for that sort of money will be either the 160Gb Hitachi 7K160 or the WD AAJS, I think the 160Gb 7200.10 is a single platter but I'm not 100% sure. There is a single platter version of the 250Gb 7200.10 but it's only just been released so I'm not sure whether it's in the dealer channels yet.

For that sort of money you could go up to 320Gb quite easily, the WD AAKS for example is only £47 + delivery. While this drive has two platters they're still the same 166Gb platters as the AAJS so there should be no difference in sustained transfer rates.

Reckon I'll be able to get one of these next generation of drives for £50? Like a 250mb Seagate 7200.11?

I might wait a while.

I very much doubt that there will be a 250Gb 7200.11 since Seagate have just announced a single platter 250Gb 7200.10 which uses the .11 platter. They should come in under £50 but the problem is going to be finding someone who's got the newer drives rather than the two platter version.

Looking at Seagates website, there are 4 models of the 250

SATA 3.0Gb/s 250GB ST3250310AS
SATA 3.0Gb/s 250GB ST3250410AS
SATA 3.0Gb/s 250GB ST3250620AS
SATA 3.0Gb/s 250GB ST3250820AS

edit: Actually, they are OEM ones also

These two are the single platter ones, one is an 8Mb cache version the other is 16. They're also physically thinner than the older ones (0.75" vs 1").

Cool, £44.50 for the 16mb.

I wonder if they have the same dodgy rattle and click that the original 7200.10's have...

Hmm the 320GB Samsung F1 HD322HJ looks ideal for what I need. And I like Samsung drives... Any idea when these will be out?

(sorry for loads of questions)
