Fastest PC possible = ?

Indeed; I sometimes use the Quadro card in my workstation to do statistical analyses via monte-carlo markov chain algorithms. Need the poke and need the double precision...

Its funny that people overlook that aspect when they are comparing Geforce to Quadro especially when they are going on about flashing firmware from GeForce to Quadro.

Single precision vs double gets left out of a lot of comparisons :(. Entertaining read in case you haven't seen it - "twelve ways to fool the masses"

Flashing a geforce card with a slightly hacked bios causes the OS to identify it as a quadro. It can't change the hardware, but it does change the driver. The advantage lies in using drivers optimised for CAD instead of for computer games. I'm sure I saw a benefit in solid modelling using drivers intended for a fx3700 instead of for my 8800gt.

Well, I am already a bit worried that I made a bad choice.

A Single Xeon plus cooler is on its way with the Mobo. I have everything else to get me started.

Buying 2 CPUs is simply going VERY MUCH over the top really... I can still be proud to have a monster as it is like this, so maybe I will get the second CPU, maybe not.

We shall see.

It'll be awesome, just not necessarily cost effective. Do you think you'll go with ecc memory? One of the advantages of buying Xeon chips, though it won't help with the budget.

It's the lack of overclocking which really hurts multisocket systems - but since you're running at stock regardless that doesn't really affect you. Which chip did you go for?

The 2687W
Its a grand and a half and to be completely honest, when I started the thread, I had abso0lutely no intention of paying anywhere near this... I was sort of thinking maybe £800 to £900 tops for an I7 and I never even considered a Xeon.

But the thing is... I thought sod it, why not treat myself.

The simple fact is, that on December the 4th last year, a bin wagon pulled out on me on my bike. I broke my back in 4 places, shattered my pelvis into 6 pieces, broke my right femur in 3 places and crushed the joint, also my already replaced knee, was once again replaced, I broke both my arms, the right one is now good but the left one is now useless, and I also broke all my left ribs and 8 on my right. Internally, I punchtured my left lung in 2 places, my right lung in one, both kidneys were lacerated and I have only recently come off dialasys ( however you spell it ) my liver was ripped in two and my spleen was ruptured. I have also had numerous rips in my intestines.

The doctors told my family that I would not make it past a week. I was sent to all staffs and my mother rented a house for the family to all go own and stay until the end.

However, I came out of the come after 3 weeks and now even though I am in a wheelchair, I can walk sort of with crutches, and it looks possible that I will get out of it.

So sod it... I should be dead. And if I want to spent a stupid amount of money on a PC that I will never truly need, then sod it why not? Life is too short.

Of course the wife also wants a fridge and a cooker.

Did you buy a dual socket board?

Are you intending to add another 2687W In the future? If not the best bet would have been to buy 2 x E5-2640... You are aware that there is virtually no overclocking on the Xeon CPUS?

Look at it this way. If you have something that will take advantage of all cores then for the same money the 2 x E5-2650s are a better buy. Raw performance (Ghz) would be 1 x E5-2687W = 24.8Ghz and the 2 x E5-2640 = 30Ghz. The tradeoff would be a) You would have to replace both cpus if you needed to upgrade and b) Power consumption would be 190w compared to 150w.

I went for the Asus Z9PE

It does both types of RAM and this means that I dont need to pay any more.

I did however see that I could have gone for the much cheaper XEON CPU and indeed bought two of them too, and I will almost definitely return the CPU ( web sale and all that ) and go for the two instead, thus saving me a grand but I still get the same performance ( Do I? ) but I also get 2 CPUs.

Overclocking? - no, Im not going to do that.

Mate, you've got FASTEST PC already. FOR YOUR NEEDS if I've read them properly :)

Dual-CPU motherboards, Xeons = it's not for you, it will be overkill.
PC won't work faster in terms of noticeable behaviour. It will calculate faster, but in terms of video encoding dual Xeon won't help, if you will buy 2xGTX 780 and install CUDA-based encoder.

All you need is to focus on PCIe-based SSDs, might be in RAID, and upgrade you RAMs to 64GB in quad = and make huge RAM-disk (32 GB) and put all TEMPS and swap there... maybe try to install some kind of packed/hibernated image of Windows as bootloader simply to load an OS image at startup instead of initialize whole system.

I'd suggest spending money on a car, rather than a PC you may not get value from! Safety first!

In all honesty though spend your money on what you want. It's just that, on here, people try to offer builds that offer the most value for price/performance, so it's difficult for people to recommend such monster parts to a certain extent.

Also, the doctors and nurses who cared for you sound like guardian angels. The thread is quite sobering to be honest.

Ok then... WANTS not NEEDS.

Please dont go telling me this now!

CUDA based encoder?

Well, I think that SSDs are still too young for me to put my faith in them fully.
Im happy to have them as C: but for my data, I still prefer the good old Disk.

Plus, I never switch my PC off so startup / shutdown times are very much a mute arguement for me.

I already have a car - A Ford Focus 1.6

sobering? - I'll drink to that!

That's a spectacular crash. Yeah, probably should have died on the rosdside :(. Lucky man.

That's the cpu i'd like. Solid choice.

Yes, I should have. But hey... It wasnt my time... God needed me to suffer a bit longer and keep me alive to put up with the wifes nagging a bit more.

As for the CPU, I am 50/50 with it.

I am wondering if I should have simply bought 2 of the other ones?

I have emailed the supplier and asked, saying it was a mistake purchase and that I meant to get the other one, but they have yet to reply.

I mean, unless I am mistaken, but the only difference is 4 and 8 core, and with 2 CPUs, it will be 8 core wont it?
