Hi,

Just installed a 7970 into a new PC. All running stock.

Go to run 3dmark or Windows Experience checker and the system turns off and then reboots.

I have the 8pin and the 6pin Power for the GPU connected.

Is it possible the GPU faulty?

Hi guys,

Thanks for quick replies.

THe PSU is an Antec 750

It's a brand new PC.

I don't have another card to try :-(

What's the latest 7970 driver? When i go to their site and select their driver the page doesn;t load.

Sounds like you've got drivers issues, as card problems would mainly be artifacting, problems on part of the screen and strange visual things. Driver issues tend to cause lock ups and BSODS. Completely remove all AMD software, turn system off, remove card and re insert making sure it is home properly in the PCI slot, then install the drivers from post 12 then report back here.

Looks like the card is at fault. The onboard GPU works fine.

Right. I would look in the bios and try and disable the onboard GPU and take it out of the equation completely.

I don't know if you did, but please check your board manu for a bios update. I remember when I bought my 5770s my board I was using wouldn't post at all with a 5 series Radeon in.

This could be a simple clash of GPUs. So, as I say, try and disable the onboard in the bios and make sure that PCIE slot is initialised first.

Hi,

Just an update for you guys.

The GPU was replaced and the problem is still happening.

I guess the next thing is to get the PSU replaced and update the BIOS if there's an update for the ASUS Maximus IV GENE-Z Gen 3

I had two 7970s. One of them was faulty, artifacts all over the place, and on both it happened for system to reboot. Now the faulty card has been sent away, but on the working card, system still reboots sometimes. I say - drivers.

Yes, there's DEFINITELY updates for that motherboard - and that board really needed BIOS updates - it's crap with the default sucker.

Where have you found those then, as the official Asus website just lists the one - release version 0402 dated 01-11-2011?

I would also be very interested in finding a later update though!

Edit: Just to confirm, he quoted his board as ASUS Maximus IV GENE-Z Gen 3, which is the same one I have, and which is a micro-ATX board.
