Fear of flying

It's not the flying I'm afraid of, it's the being crashed into a building by terrorists that scares me lol

Why not just get really drunk? that should relax you enough that you won't care about flying, you'll be too busy trying to get it on with the air hostest

the thing is the op is going to be anxious about it for weeks before hand, meaning the wedding day and the wedding night ;)

if you both want to go on holiday will she not comprimise and not fly?

if she wont then the marige is doomed anyway, someone who isnt taking your feelings into account at all isnt someone you should be looking to spend the rest of your life with

I can understand her wanting to help you overcome your phobia of flying but this isnt the time to be doing that, this is the time to be making your special time as special as possible

Was a little scared of flying then I flew from Edinburgh to Bristol last week, on the day when the gale force winds were at their strongest. Cue one extremely bumpy hour. Must be standard procedure when winds are that high but the plane seems to take off and descend at extremely steep angles. On the way up it felt like the plane was a few degrees from doing a loop-de-loop, and on the way down it felt like it was free-falling. I doubt I will be scared of flying again because I've flown in a gale and survived. So there's your solution ;)

SImply, it's an irrational fear and no end courses, flights or bunjee jumps are going to fix it, if it does then you never had a problem. Don't just take vallium, take two vallium and two beta blockers. It will appear to have very little effect but you will have no anxiety at all.

Then if an emergency does arise you'll be too far gone to figure out what to do. Hell sure why not give the pilots a wee drink too? :D

Seriously I HATE flying. I even paid for a flight once then told my mates I couldnt get time off work to get out of getting on a plane.

But, you need to MAN UP :D

I've been on a plane since (and to Australia - not one I was looking forward to!). Once you get past the initial flight it gets easier. Follow advice, take some (legal) drugs if it reduces the anxiety. You should analyse what your fear actually is - are you just thinking the plane will crash, are you scared you'll freak out and embarrass yourself? Think it through and talk it through with your fiance.

Also if you don't talk about it, she wont know how scared you are of flying, you need to be open, problem shared is problem solved and all that.

I flew for the first time in years last year, and was pretty nervous the whole time. Even though there was hardly any turbulence for the whole 12 hour flight, my palms still got sweaty whenever it got a little bit bumpy, so I'd probably turn in to a plate of jelly if I had to fly through a storm.

When taking off I always worry that we'll crash in to another plane that's circling to land, especially if it's at night, since I guess the pilot has to rely solely on instruments. I doubt that's even ever happened. :o

I do quite like landing though.

Turbulence scares the bejesus out of me and flying into Wellington is one of my least favourite things to do. I'm sure we're going to crash every time.

Same for me.

The minute we hit turbulence my hands start gripping onto the arms rests for dear life. Unfortunately I'm one of these sad people who insist on leaving my safety belt on at all times.:o

If it helps in 8 months time I'll be building passenger planes. :p

Well I fly to Florida in just over 8 months so hopefully I'm safe:p

I used to have a pretty bad fear of flying (was convinced I was never going to get on a plane again) I just happened to read Risk by Dan Gardner a few years ago, that helped a massive amount.

When my new GF wanted to go on holiday to Majorca I was embarrassed to tell her, but she was pretty scared herself, it turned out far more than me, so I suggested we fly with BA (assumed it would be quieter, less screaming babies and drunken yobs) and I was right, plus you get loads more leg room, these little things can help especially if you suffer from anxiety like I do.

Anyway, as said, the statistics show it, you're far more likely to be killed driving to work everyday.

Just to emphasize read RISK, I think thats what "cured" me, good luck :)

fun fact, when that plane crashed into the sea off the cost of Brazil the force it hit with caused passengers to be cut in half at the waist by their seatbelts.

Do you really want to live your last few moments watching your Johnson hurtle past your face towards the overhead luggage compartment?

I don't like flying at all. I'm not sure I would call it at fear because; I didn't fly untill I was 20 and I wasn't worried about that first flight at all. Even sitting on the plane ready to take off, I was fine. It wasn't untill we got to about 500ft, I just thought this isn't natural.
