hrmm out of curiousity

Anyone here from abroad suffer the same sorta problems with isps?
e.g. throttling, fair usage policies, port blocking, disconnections etc?

I mean from what ive read most of europe, usa, japan etc have a better broadband infrastructure, speed etc than good ole UK.

Also how much is it per month for your broadband? (to those from outwith UK)

cheers :D

The thing to remember is that we tend to hear of the areas with great connections.
Much of Aus is limited to a single provider (who charge by the gb from memory), where it's available at all.
Much of the US outside of the major cities has very limited choices.

And the really big difference between somewhere like the UK and Japan in terms of infrastructure - population density, it's massively cheaper to provider very high speed connections when you are talking about a single link (providing voice/data/tv) to a building with 100's of residents than it is to provide the same connection to even just a single street of individual houses.
Especially when you put that connection in when the building is under construction, and don't need to even dig up the road especially for it.
I wonder what the average connection speed/cost is for rural Japan and Korea?

A little bit faster than ours !

Some ISP's that are poor:

Tiscali
Pipex
AOL

Skybb are the best i've had currently.

Add Nildram to that list now that they are fully under the Ticscali blanket.
They used to be good, use to have a 35ms ping for gaming, now its 70-80ms.
Ports are throttled during the weekend.
Lad at work ran the speed checker on thinkbroadband, using port 80 he was 6mb line speed, swapped to the alternate port and it dropped to 230K/s. Repeated the test over several days and it showed Nildram/Tiscali are applying port blocking.
But ive got my MAC from Nilly and am moving.

I agree with Tiscali being poor at times but a quick call to their customer service and simply ask. "Please can you reset my line" cures slow connection on the line. I download on a 2MB line at a modest 250k most days. When it comes to using P2P I use scheduler and during peek times 5-11pm everyday it is turned off. It costs £14.99 a month including calls and line rental. Can't really complain its cheap, like the budgey :)

But high ping on gaming narks me off, but something I live with, play online prob once a month if that and COD 3 on Xbox live seems fast enough :)

Crikey, it makes me think some of you have never experienced 33.6K modems or ISDN line prices!

No I'm not signing it.

As has been said before on here, it is customers with champagne tastes and beer money with regards to the internet.

Perfectly true.

I hate people complaining about the quality of the broadband they pay £20 a month for. You want quality then pay for it fools.

That said, I work for an ISP, designed our broadband platform personally and have unlimited broadband (no caps, no throttling, no shaping) for free. So I just get to laugh at everyone...

I find it ironic that people want ofcom to do something about the way ISPs work, when the reason they want higher caps and speeds is to download stuff illegally. I don't know anyone who has any reasonable complaint about fair usage policies etc who obtain tv shows, movies and music through legal means. I'm sure there are a few who do, but I'd be willing to bet that these are very much in the minority.

I was with them and their throttling was insane. It never used to be (in 2004), but they got worse and worse and it got to the point where I felt bad for for all the friends I had recommended.

The same situation i was in, back in the day they were one of the best isp's. Truly unlimited with no shaping, but then they got popular and it all went to hell.
