Feed an Animal Today!

Shouldn't we let nature take it's course on wild animals? I mean aren't temperatures rising generally so in the past I'm sure it was colder. I love animals but not a fan of interferring with nature.

This is the first time i've heard about leaving food out for foxes and rats.

It's a bit like recycling two pop bottles, it's not going to save the world, it's not even going to change it, but isn't it nice to ease the pain of a few friends who are struggling to stay alive in your garden?

Can I have extra points for being vegan ? I feed the animals but also don't eat them after I've fed them ;)

I can't remember the last time I seen Hedgehog or rabbit in Tesco round here....

I know I sound like a broken record but the current fad of pristine and artificial gardens aren't helping the wildlife.... Trees and plants/flowers being replaced with artificial items all over the place.

You clearly haven't seen my garden!

Speak to your neighbours about maybe creating a hedgehog highway

Feel like I've missed a memo or something! Based on likes and comments it looks like loads of people are leaving food out... I've never heard of this being a 'thing' in the UK (apart from bird feeders obviously), and would be worried about attracting rats.

Has there been a TV show or something about this I've missed recently or have people always done this?

Always done it.

Never throw meat or processed stuff though. Sure fire way to attract proper vermin.

Wouldn't putting food out attract rats and other rodents?

Cooked food attracts rats, bird feeders are better for birds since they're suspended and the rats can't reach 'em as a rule. Squirrels can but they're not usually regarded as a pest.. feeding the ducks is another matter as you can toss them directly to them to eat but don't scatter willy nilly once while at the council park watching the mums and kids feeding the ducks I couldn't help but notice a humongous rat scurrying between the bushes

Leaving food out for any sort of small animal in our garden would just be providing a buffet (either the scraps or the small animals) for our cat.

As a general point, be aware feeding birds with feeders and not washing them regularly is quite possible a big reason for the spread of some avian diseases.

I believe there's even a debate as to whether feeding wild birds is more damaging. They group together unnaturally and this aids transmission.

There's a particularly nasty one taking its toll on finch population. Green finch in particular have taken a huge knock.

I bet most people don't wash thier feeders.
