Lately I feel as if I am growing old (I am only 23). I have started going the local more with a mate or 2 and just playing pool and having 3 or 4 pints and heading home. I have also started to get fit with a punch bag, I use it for about 3 hours a week...anyway, with just the above, I would be fine...but the latest mad thing I feel strangely compelled to do, is to take up golf...

I have never played golf in my life, yet now I feel like buying some clubs and heading down to the local course...I have only ever thought as golf as a sport/hobby for retired people...

Anyone else have random strong feelings towards starting some random new sport/hobby and should I just give in, buy a cheap £100 set of clubs and do it?

Golf is a hobby enjoyed by people of all ages - from 3 to 103. It's not for 'retired' people at all. If you want to try it, then go for it!

A couple of my friends have been playing golf since we were in school. You're never too old (young?).
It's not for me though, too much standing around. Prefer swimming/climbing.

Anyway, hobby/activity options are endless. Go to the gym and become part of the protein club? :p

Pffft........young whipper-snapper. Wait till you hit 43. I reach those dizzy heights in @1 month and take it from me, that does feel old!!.

Joking aside though, old cliche but you are only as young as you feel. Do what you want in life and have no regrets because it most certainly is 'too short'. And golf?. I play golf once per year with my watch as an annual day out. It's not pretty. But it's incredible fun. Last year I actually went round with a damn respectable score which some of the regular golfers said they would be happy with. I'd consider taking it up but I haven't got the time to make the most of it. Maybe when I retire which is where I think a lot of the perception of golf being for oldies comes from as a lot of folk seem to get into it once they retire.

Could be worse, you could be talking about having a strange compulsion to take up fly fishing. :D

Just a warning but Golf can really drive you mad sometimes.

Started playing when I was 7 through til I was about 28.

From 7 to 13 I would play or go on the driving range nearly every day as my grandad worked there.

Never seemed to improve past 22-23.

Just when you think you're getting it you go and have a bad round and it drove me mad that I couldn't keep my consistency.

lol your mad OP

at 23 I left my job and went travelling for nearly 3 months, had a great time.

At 45 I took 6 weeks off and drove to Ulan Bator Mongolia in an old banger.

I'll be 46 in about 2 weeks, I only feel old because I creak when I get up in the morning.. Stop putting yourself in ya box early and go live life..

Random sport/hobby eh..

Started kick boxing at the age of 37. Gave up at 40 but started Karate instead.

Never give up doing something..

I recently started lock picking. I think it's the opposite of getting old. Getting old to me is getting suckered into a routine and doing the same old thing. Doing new stuff, regardless of what it is, isn't being old. Learn how to do golf, then go on to something else. Also not really sure what using a punch bag has to do with anything lol.

I sometimes have to seriously stop and think when anyone asks how old I am. I don't care much for any age related pigeon holing, I just do what I want and if my mind writes a cheque my body can't cash then I just know I either have to try harder or make smarter decisions.
