Fergie's Book

I don't understand why Newcastle fans get so obsessed with Sunderland. Have Newcastle won anything in the last 50 years?

It's about as interesting a rivalry as Cambridge United and Peterborough ;)

sometimes none of that matters, get yourself to a Mansfield v chesterfield game if you want to see fierce rivalry

Since when has a rivalry been based on winning things?

It always has been a local rivalry about local bragging rights, in what way do trophies impact this?

Local rivalries are more pure than one based around trophies as there are reasons based around it beyond temporary success. Rivalries based on success fade ManU/Arsenal being an example whereas the local ones never will.

I just don't think I could brag about being equally as crap, winning nothing but winning a derby.

In the 80s I used to care what Liverpool where doing and beating them would mean something. Now they are equally as pap it's not really something to brag about.

When you don't win anything or languish in lower leagues rivalries mean a lot.

Getting one over the rivals is one of the most important aspects of football to a supporter next to winning a trophy.

When you earn millions like Fergie di. Do you really need to monetize an autobiography? Seems a bit pathetic to me.

being a club manager is one position where you can't afford to hold a grudge. Sadly fergie was the king of grudges and hindered his own team because of it

Given the number of not very good players they bought from United over the years you might have thought he'd feel better disposed to them than apparently he did...

Maybe he didn't like the way they treated some of the players/managers?....Roy Keane's and Steve Bruce's times both ended badly didn't they?

Not really, the derby holds little interest for me these days, what's the bragging rights in beating an equally average team. Everyones different but I don't see the fascination in fixating yourself on beating another also ran.

I went to both cup finals in the 80's and for me the derby games used to be so much better, not just because of the stature of both teams but more of the players used to get how important it was. Derby games for me in the main have been dire in the last 10 or so years. Ceratinly they haven't been as good or passionate as Lievrpool Manu games of late.

Anyway I don't get Newcastle fans fascination with targeting Sunderland, perhaps they wouldn't be so **** themselves if they aimed a bit higher ;)

Wouldn't change derby days, would live to win a trophy but realistically its bit going to happen so you take what enjoyment you can.

** Comment removed - don't get personal ** do you even watch football? How can you say that because teams aren't winning trophies that their local rivalries aren't a big deal.

Don't comment unless you know the local derby that is Newcastle vs Sunderland.

I wouldn't bother, he is just having a dig at Liverpool more than anything. Its a shame that the match going Evertonians don't think the same isn't it Dannyjo
