...or Mr Ecclestone will be dividing and conquering again as he did in 2005.
Ecclestone is the absolute best in the business. No one else even comes close.
The F1 teams are run by team principals with quite a lot of power and realistically, Bernie is the only guy who can get all teams working together (as has been proven over the last few decades).
Whitmarsh certainly is not Bernie.
With regards McLaren leaving FOTA - aren't they the main team who are behind FOTA? Whitmarsh is chairman so if they leave, FOTA will disintegrate fairly quickly.
I'm not so sure that Whitmarsh/McLaren will leave FOTA. They would be fools to continue, but McLaren aren't the most cunning bunch. I remember when they agreed to not use KERS, when they had the best KERS device in the entire field. A cunning team would've insisted that KERS be allowed, which would've helped them win the title in 2010. I doubt that RBR would agree to abandon their flexible bodywork or Renault willingly give up their advanced exhaust system...but anyway.
Ferrari might have made the decision to spend their way to success (their statement does not explicitly state that they are going to spend big). They have a great team, but at present they cannot "break" RBR. They need to spend big money, to "break" RBR, so this might be the plan.
Next year should be very interesting, IF Ferrari have decided to remove budgetary constraints.
