FF VII basic help with fighting

I'm sure someone will know this but i've searched high and wide for this on the net and can't find it anywhere...

How do you choose defend when fighting in FFVII? I'm trying to kill Midgar Zolom at the moment and I think defend may help, but I can't see to find it anywhere to select.

If I remember right just press Right when its that characters turn and you should have the option to Defend.
 
I've just had the flashback with Sepiroth and left Kalm.

Do you mean press left or right on the D-Pad?
 
I can get him down to about 600ish hp, but the only problem is when he hits Beta, Barrett or Tifa dies (one of them has usually been kicked out of the battle by now) and Cloud is left with 30 hp. MZ then attacks straight away again before I can use an Elixer.
 
If one has been kicked out of battle that's a good thing, a get out of death free card. If your party dies but one person has been kicked out the battle will end but you'll still be alive because of that one character who was kicked out. It is using this that got me beta early in the game, kept trying until he kicked one of my party out and then he used beta which was absorbed by the one carrying enemy skill, who then died. After my party had been 'wiped' it went back to the world map with me carrying an enemy skill that had adsorbed beta.
 
As Streeteh says, you want someone who doesn't have the enemy skill to get kicked and the when the Zolom unleashes beta and kills the other two the enemy skill materia wil get updated anyway.
 
oh! i thought you had to kill the monster to get the skill. I'll check this out when i get home :D
 
I spent fing ages leveling up to fight the MZ, I cant remember what the level was but it was way way higher than I should have been by that point in the game. Walked into the marshes (without saving) and promptly got pwned. The MZ is simply not supposed to be defeated on disk 1. As said save, hope someone gets kicked and the remaining party members have ES when Beta is used.

I was about level 25 when I defeated it.

I went back and did it as soon as I could get on the boat to go back across.

Saying that though, I got my ass kicked while I got beta from it then fought it again and beta'd it to death.
 
I've only got 1 ES Materia on me at the moment. Have I missed out on one somewhere?

Also lets say Cloud has the ES Skill with Beta in it. If he gives that materia to Tifa, does she then have the Beta skill?

The skills are stored in the materia. So whoever has the materia has the skill

I think the further through the game you play the easier it will be to defeat the MZ. This is mostly due to the fact you have newer and greater materia (summons in particular), rather than level strength.
 
The skill does look like it does a ridiculous amount of damage. Am i wrong in thinking for the next few battles i can just cast that first and i'm done?

I cant remember I think it was more powerful than the rest of your magic IIRC but its dependent on your level. IIRC the MZ has a way higher level than you at this point in the game and therefore has a higher magic strength, so you won't get as great a result as it did, but you should be able to kill most things.

Whenever I play a FF game I tend to spend a large amount of my time leveling up. so all normal enemies are killed in the first hit and most bosses don't last more than a few hits. (which is why I was so surprised when the MZ killed me so quickly)
 
Ah, i remembered the catch with Beta, it uses something silly like 75MP which at that point in the game is a huge chunk of your MP. So yeah it will kill nearly anything, but you only get to use it once per rest/ether.
