Field? That's racist...

Next they'll be calling cows racist because of their activities in a field. Wokism belongs in a cowpat.

I think Universities need a vaccine for this virus that is running rampant throughout their institutions

People need to just ignore this **** and focus on more important things. However, no doubt this will cause an absolute category 5 **** storm on social media (and probably even in this thread).

Wokism is the reason why I've never had a Twitter account. Facebook isn't much better and I do have an account and only use it sparingly.

Undergrads are a very energetic and angry bunch with a lot of time on their hands. Things like this are the result.

When I was an undergrad in the years 1998 to 2002, it was all about getting rat-arsed most nights and doing the occasional bit of study. Superclubs, pizza/curry nights, movie nights, pub crawls, house parties, no politics at all, LAN parties, early message boards/forums, hacking into each other's computers, fire alarms going off at 5AM. Good times. Now, it's all "social media", politics and veganism. Something has gone wrong in the last 20 years.

People still do nearly all those things. You just got old grandad

The word "field" is massively utilised in academia in all sorts of ways. This is just utterly ridiculous.

It's the same as the use of the phrase "blackboard". It's called a blackboard because it's a board that is coloured black. There was a time where some people were getting equally as upset about that insisting we should call them chalkboards to avoid the racist links to the word. It's the same crowd that want to ban the use of the word "christmas" and instead call it the "holidays" so as to avoid offending non Christians.

It's all absolutely nonsense, have plenty of friends and colleagues across numerous different nationalities and faiths, none of these people find it offensive when you use the word Christmas, or use the word field. If you start saying a black person must know how to farm a cotton field because they're black - now we're being racist. But the word isn't racist in itself. I'm aware the right likes to use this stuff as evidence that anybody who doesn't agree with them is the "radical left" so i'm not going there. Just talking about common sense here.

Show me the massive petition from African American's wanting the use of the word field banned ... go on i'll wait.

I read this the other day and thought - What next ?

Mind you there is a field of Pansies at bottom of my garden

Is perhaps pointless and stupid? Maybe. However, ultimately an organisation has chosen to change some of the language it uses - you can agree or disagree, but it is the organisation's decision and it will likely have zero impact on anyone's life.

Agreed. This is a nonsense story deliberately designed to wind people up. No one is forcing anyone to do anything or change their behaviour, it's just one guy making a daft suggestion. The story riles up all the usual suspects, leading to more hatred and more division.

Anyone with an ounce of common sense should see this.

I know someone with the surname 'Field.' May as well just change it to the N word and be perceived as a proper racist.

One of the GPs at my practice is a Dr Field. Not that it's actually possible to see a GP now.

We just need the "The youth of today will be the downfall of society" to complete the grumpy old man bingo!

I am an old *******, I'll give you that, but as a matter of fact I still enjoy superclubs, pizza/curry nights, movie nights, pub crawls and house parties. Not done a LAN party for while though as online gaming has taken over. What I was getting at in my post is that things weren't as politicised in the late 90s / early 00s. Social media from around 2007 onwards is partly what caused things to become more political with issues like veganism and virtue-signalling.

It's how times have changed. I'm not age-bashing the 'yoofs'. In fact, I prefer age-bashing the old, because I hate being old myself :p
