Just on the off chance - I'm sure I remember reading someone talking about being an ex-Ford tech on here recently.

MILs Fiesta is ten years old this year. That means belt change, and it's a wet belt, so it's a big job. Closest Ford main dealer has quoted £1700!

Anyone know what the book price is?

She's going to try some other Ford dealers, but it wouldn't hurt if I can get her any more info.

Just let it grenade and then get a scrapped unit. My mums is on a 17 plate and this is my plan, too.

That'd be a lovely idea - but it says only 2016 onwards in the article.
I believe it's only auto's as well.

Need to get my Focus booked in for March. ~£1,900 for main dealer near me, or I've heard of ~£900 can be had at independents. Main dealer includes 12hrs labour. I've read that the newer chain versions aren't much better since the oil pump belt is still behind the chain and so has a significant amount of labour involved.

I've seen a couple of local indies around here advertising that they've got all the kit and can do it for around £800-900. If you can find one local then that seems to be the way to go.

Reminds of the injector chuffing problem the 1.4 tdci and Peugeot hdis used to get. It was like a 700 quid book job but once you got the muscle memory you could do it in under 2 hours. It someone has sussed it out at 800 quid I'm tempted... My mum's only has about 14k...

This is why people skip belt services or sell the car when it's due.

I remember the claims that these tiny turbo engines were great when they were new. Others saying it will be a bucket of issues. Seems the latter were right :D

Exactly what my colleague is doing with his 2015 Fiesta later this year. Surely even in the trade it makes them worth a lot less though? He was talking about trading in and while I got the impression they were doing a good job of selling a Puma to him I don't think they have talked numbers on the trade in yet.

Most of these small turbo engines seem to be generally reliable, it's just Ford's pee poor implementation of them that seems to have real issues.

The 1.2 and 1.4 VW made was just as bad. But in typical VAG style, they didn't do recalls (except to remove emissions cheats).

Obviously it doesn't mean they will sell at that - but scouting AT for nearly 10 year old models, and there are very few that make any mention of the belt service. And all the ones that don't are not priced any lower.
I reckon the sellers either don't know themselves, or are hoping the buyer doesn't.

If you are on the one careful/non-ragged owner spectrum and had ford (synthetic?) oil changes doesn't that give some solace/security ,
are short journeys and poor warm-up technique, as much contributory though.

Yea always ask for evidence the belt has been done if it's supposed to have been.

yep, won international engine of the year award too. pointless having small engine to save fuel if down the line you loose all your saving in engine repair/replacement. better off buying the bigger engine thats reliable long term but rips the fuel.

She's now looking at replacing the car with a newer Fiesta. 1.1 Zetec around the 2017 mark.

Any similar self-lunching issues with that age and engine that I should warn her about?
