fiesta 1.3 engine

the 1.25 is a great engine for a 1st car.

I looked at some 1.3's but decided to get a diesel 1.8 because i do a lot of mileage.

erm right i did a whatcar mpg check on both the 1.3 encore and 1.25 lx, these are the results,

Town mpg 32.5
Out of Town mpg 47.9
Average mpg 40.9

- 1.25 LX

Town mpg 32.5
Out of Town mpg 48.7
Average mpg 40.9

- 1.3 Encore

there practically identical

The 1.3 isn't really a bad engine its pretty good infact. You have to keep in mind though that it is showning its age(it must be nearly 40 yrs old in one way or another, which must mean its been pretty good). The reason I guess they kept using it is cost to produce as it must cost a lot less than a later multivale engine. The down side of that is that the power isnt as good and it can be noisy compared to modern engines but it shouldnt be called crap. Just outdated. :D

yeh not surprised at that, my 1.25 isnt THAT economical for its size, i usually get 39-40mpg all round driving from my 1.25 and i hardly drive it 'hard'.

if the 1.3 is the same however, then even more a reason to get a 1.25 over a 1.3 performance wise. 73bhp i think the 1.25 kicks out when first out compared to the 59bhp iirc of the 1.3... i know its not the world, but the 1.25 is a superb engine for what it is...

I used to own Ford Fiesta 1.25 zetec for 5 years and since it is 16v, it needs to rev higher than you would need to, to build up speed. But it was great for me, however, my girlfriend, while learning to drive, found it difficult to drive.
No idea how she found it hard to drive. I had one as my first car and it was fantastic to drive :)

I had the old 1.1 ford engine, which I believe is pretty similar to the 1.3 in most respects (I expected to be found out to be wrong though!), and I never one averaged over 30mpg to a tank of fuel.

A full tank down to fumes (~44 litres or 10 gallons) would see me just short of 300 miles every time.

The 1.3 is a reasonable engine and nothing wrong with owning one but you can now buy the 1.25 for the same money so it makes buying a 1.3 kinda redundant unless it is seriously cheap and in good condition.
