Fiesta ST to Focus ST?

Nah that's fair mate, just that you put running costs as a concern, and I thought i'd make it clear that the Focus ST is a thirsty car. :)

I have a 07 St-2. Over the last 3000 Miles I have averaged 28.9MPG.

Its not cheap to run but its not as bad as people make out, will soon be Mapping with a Dreamscience map so will see what happens to the MPG then. Good car and love driving it & would defo recommend as an upgrade form the Fiesta

not so much worried about the running costs, just wanted to get a very clear picture of what to expect from ownership.

as mentioned in my OP, the maintainance of the car can be done for reasonable prices which i am more than happy with.

but looking on parkers at the MPG and asking actual owners of a car usually highlights discrepancies. which is the main reason for posting.

i think in hindsight that my original budget quote was a little low. in fairness it would be largely dictated by the sale of my current car anyway.
however. it does seem doable [at least more than the impreza anyway]

it certainly wouldnt be an ill considered decision, feedback here so far is appreciated.

i picked mine up on December 23rd 05. Over the two years I had it, I averaged 20mpg~, usually it was much lower.

Tyres were (remember 4~ years ago), £180 a corner. During my time nothing went wrong with it. I had to have a washer cover replaced for the xenons after DezUk reversed into it at the RR, but this was done under warrany. Other than that, no issues what so ever. I don't really think it would be massively different cost wise (other than servicing) than a good example of an Impreza STI.

With the ST3 you do lose the 5th seat and you gain a 'bench'. ST2 isn't a bad choice.

Handling for a high powered FWD car is very very good, lots of communication and you feel connected. Gearbox is decent enough. Engine noise is superb. Bits of Turbo lag, but nothing that bad, it will pull when not in the correct gear for the time.

You will start to mod the car, that's guarenteed. But modding these is quite cheap.

Orange paint is a nightmare to match (mine was black thankfully).

Insurance group is 19 (if memory serves me right).

You would be buying a good car, but running costs are that of an exceptional car. It does love to drink fuel, and once you start getting on the loud pedal and addicted to the noise of the 2.5l engine, then you'll see the fuel gauge go down.

Go drive one, any more questions then there have been plenty of owners on here who will help. My expierences are older now, but hopefully will still help :)

Why buy a Focus ST that handle like a shed on wheels? You will turn and the car wont.....

I'm not sure I agree with this, I test drove a Focus ST last year and whilst the handling wasn't mind blowing, I certainly wouldn't describe it like a shed on wheels.

The Focus ST's handling is actually very good indeed, it's one of the best handling hatches around. It certainly doesnt handle anything like a 'shed on wheels'.

As ever it seems Subaru owners are confusing grip and handling :p

Typical american brute force (focus) versus japanese refinment (civic)

Not at all, the Focus is not an American car and is not sold in America (The US Focus is different to the Mk2 Focus over here). It is entirely European - from design stage to production stage. And the Civic certainly isn't refined, it's the rawest of the cars in question if we are discussing the 01-07 shape.

You could accuse the Astra VXR of being all about brute force for sure but the Focus has the right bland of power *and* control. It's certainly the precision instrument of the Astra VXR, Golf GTI and Focus ST trio.

I've had an ST, a WRX and an Sti and tbh you can't really compare them. The ST is much easier to live with as a day to day motor and can modded to fast enough very cheaply and easilly. They handle well and the torque makes for a very relaxed and refined drive. They are a great car and other than the mpg I would have one again no problem.

The Impreza's are much more expensive to own and run, get into modding and you will become hooked and very poor very quickly. WRX is closer of course but you will then spend the next 2 years regretting not getting an STi or trying to make it into one..

this is a fair evaluation, thanks :)

highlighted in my OP the running costs of the WRX would be closer to that of the focus, however maintaining a WRX or even an STI would be significantly more which means it isnt a viable prospect.
