4-2-3-1 is immense, best formation i have used so far.
since passing is important and the way the full backs run up, you ideally need to have as many player's in the midfield as possible, without leaving you short at the back, so any formation which has 2 cdm's and 4 at the back is ideal i feel.
with 3 atb your just too exposed on the wings so it doesn't work.
not lost a game so far when using 4231 (either version).
i also take ages picking my defensive 7 players (GK, back 4 and 2 cdm's), analysing every stat there is on futwiz, work rates, defensive ability, physical presence, etc.
here's my teams which i have built without buying any packs got 5k to spend as well

looking to buy Costa (the animal) for Aduriz up front, Aduriz with his 88 heading is amazing up against weak CB's, i played one game where every goal kick, free kick, long ball, hoofed up to him he won with ease and knocked it on to a team mate or brought down with ease, he's like Drogba in his prime and costs less than 1000 coins.

not happy with Jagielka (will upgrade to Vertonghen when i can afford him), then upgrade Verm to Kompany.
Ivanovic doesn't look too good either for chasing down through balls or fast winger's, but i was willing to try him out because his defence and heading are so high.
Garcia and Essien look the business defensively, will upgrade Garcia to Toure when I can (long time away).
Jarvis will do for now, Mirallas looks decent though for the coins, will upgrade both when I can.
Need a CAM with high passing and dribbling and long shots on the cheap.
Not looked at strikers yet but there's so many good ones in the BPL it's gonna be hard to choose, I like well rounded ones, good heading, pace and dribbling.
Will keep Begovic for a while, he looks good, until i can blow major cash on Cech or whoever is top dog below 30K, 6'7 this time round? wtf did he grow 2 inches in a year?
basically i'm quite happy with the liga bbva and serie A teams, i don't think they can be upgraded much without major coins like Chiellini, Ramos, Balotelli, Benzema, etc.
might look at better CAM's and winger's but they were the the pick of the bunch i was looking at for my budget.
BPL team though looks like will be a work in progress for a long time.
will build Ligue 1 and Bundesliga teams too soon, once i save up 50K or so.
probably end up trying Brazil again too, but Silva is gonna be hard to buy.
