What precisely is your point, you think there aren't **** holes around stadiums in the UK?
People constantly bang on about Fifa and these competitions costing money but they are an investment in infrastructure(sometimes well implemented, sometimes not, like all public works). They create jobs, EVERY country throws money at public projects to create jobs, it stimulates the economy. it's advertising the atmosphere of your country around the globe. Many places spend millions, hundreds of millions a year advertising themselves in other countries.
South Africa included a new airport for the world cup, Fifa didn't pay for this, no **** they didn't. But it's effectively an excuse to push forwards some public works that hopefully will help the country long term. Brazil, IIRC have spent buttloads on hydroelectric power for Rio, they are meant to be doing it in time for the world cup and other events(I don't know if they managed this). Part of these works and things done to Rio helped them win the Olympics bid as well.
Countries can't simply spend their money on short term problems because they'd have no growth long term and things get worse overall, not better. Lets say they spend 20billion rehousing the poor in Rio today, and in 20 years when the population is 10million higher you have 10million people unemployed and with no where to live. Or you spend that 20billion on projects you hope will stimulate the economy.
I wish people would shut up about countries spending money on public works because by and large they HELP the countries be less poor long term which helps the people a lot more than short term rubbish.
They have done some stupid stuff for this world cup, a stadium in the middle of nowhere with no team to use it afterwards is retarded, but not the biggest cost of the world cup either. It will give them a venue for other events though.
Countries with poor people will always have problems when they spend big trying to improve the country long term, however that pretty much encompasses every country in the world. England spent money on the olympics(and euro's, and bids for world cup) because these things tend to help long term and not be an immediate short term pay off.
Public works never go down well with the poor, and papers will never talk about them positively and they will always focus on the short term loss and ignore all the other aspects of the spending.
