FIFA World Cup 2014 - Round of 16 [28th June - 1st July] **spoilers**

point is we have had decent managers and still flopped.

Not with the current set of players we haven't.

I still can't look past Brazil pulling it all together and coming up trumps

But if I had to pick an outsider it would be Columbia for sure. They are a team whos loving playing together and they have some of the quality too

Wouldn't want to be on anyone mind...

I was actually wrong, I suppose you could say Colombia are the standout team, they've been very good.

Are you implying all managers are destined to be Hodgson's equal unless they win the World Cup or reach the final regardless of whether they win 0 matches or 5 and lose in the semi final?

We played the same way, the same attitude, the same general style, the same players flopping, the same lack of effort. A different manager didn't change the attitudes of the players. Someone lumped England in with ALL the other group loses as if every group is equally difficult to get out of. Italy, Uruguay and Costa Rica is not an easy group. We've had easier groups before and thus assuming that getting one stage further last time was "better" is really not something you can state for a fact. If we went out last time in a group with Spain and Holland, yet went through this time playing South Korea, Iran, Russia and Ghana or something, would we have done categorically better?

I don't think England did well, nor as bad as people said, but to ignore the quality of the group is daft.

We went through in the last World cup with a group including the USA, Algeria and Slovenia, in group terms last time was a very easy group and this time was a tough group. We only won a single game with a MUCH easier group.

Well said. End of discussion

The sample size of games means that direct comparisons are pretty meaningless, especially given the differences in groups.

Can't wait for the quarter-finals, with the way this world cup is there could be some great clashes.

Just a shame Scotland didn't qualify, with the way we've been playing recently, we had a decent chance to do something - like get out of the group stage.

Tough one, really want the US to win today as my son is half yank. However, their fans and media are so obnoxious it's infuriating. They are WORLD BEATERS don't you know.

Was that Lawro with a bit of casual sexism or did I hear wrong? "He should have put a skirt on"

The Swiss can't afford to keep blowing their chances.

Argentina are a poor team with a few world class players. Doesn't matter how bad they play, at any moment, Messi, Di Maria, Higuain, Aguero (when fit) might just pick the ball up and score out of nowhere.
