FIFA World Cup 2014 - Semi-finals [8th - 9th July] **spoilers**

I really hope Messi gets to lift the world cup to cement his place as one of the greatest ever once and for all. he already is in my eye's though but some people will always doubt him unless he does it.

why though, The team haven't been great and wouldn't really deserve to win it on merit would they?

To me Germany as a "Team" deserve to win it, not some team that people only seem to know the main man playing for.

Messi has been anonymous a lot of the tournament so even if Argentina win it there will still be doubts, unless he has a great final. A lot of people just want to see him perform to his best outside of La Liga for a team other than Barcelona.

Argentina beat Germany 3-1 the last time they played in 2012.

Anyone expecting Argentina to defend as poorly as Brazil did and concede heavily are in for a big shock :)

Was the (German team) a full 1st XI?

I cant see anything other than a German thrashing (even if its just the performance rather than the score)

Don't think Argentina will make it easy for Germany they are well organised at the back and can't be as bad going forward again, looking forward to the final.

Glad the referee stamped out the ridiculous behaviour of the Dutch goalkeeper I was shocked it was allowed to continue in the quarter final shoot out.

hmmm funny as all along during this tournament I've heard nothing but moaning from the commentators about Argentina's iffy defence.

I almost want to chuck a bet on Germany to win, but Mascherano was so good tonight and Argentina look difficult to beat :/

Microsoft Bing maintaining it's 100% prediction record though!!

I think he has been outstanding tbh. His movement and passing has been some of the best I have ever seen. Unreal vision.

Messi was particularly poor tonight. Robben, RVP and Sneijder were all pretty awful too. Holland have clearly been geared to sit back and counter (due to a weak defence/central midfielders), and without Robben on form they can't do that.

Germany will thrash Argentina, unless they bottle it, but they'll be confident and are better man for man.

I think the 7-1 win is clouding peoples judgements.

Argentina are a far better team at the back than Brazil and will look to close down Germany every time they have the ball. If you don't allow good players space to play good football you can prevent them from creating chances and scoring goals.

We destroyed Arsenal and Everton at Anfield because they played in to our hands like Brazil did to Germany. We faced a very poor West Brom in between those two games and only managed a 1-1 draw because they defended extremely well and gave us no space.

I agree with that - think it will be really tight. I simply can't see a way in which Germany will lose though.

That Argentinian team cannot keep the ball. If Germany concede they'll have enough of the ball to pile pressure on. If they score early, the Argies won't touch the ball again.

Going for a comfortable 2-0 German win. Possibly 2-1, but never any real danger.

Edit: I used the Liverpool-Arsenal example with a mate earlier today, it's spot on. The key difference is that the Germans are a lot better than we are at getting the job done, so should win even if Argentina do try to keep it tight.

To be fair the opinion he needs to win a WC to be mentioned as one of the GOATs is stupid and anyone who thinks so is stupid

Not sure why people put Messi on such a pedestal. Seems to have been quite average compared to many other players this World Cup.

Try watching it. He has been simply brilliant in terms of his passing and creating opportunities. Not the best player in this World Cup I would agree, but still very very good.

Reckon Argie will win it on Sunday. They seem to be doing just about enough and defensively they are getting better

He's made more goal scoring opportunities then any other player

Strongest team in the weakest group... check. Played every game.... check. Takes every freekick... check. In a tournament setting with only a limited number of games wouldn't you expect a player like him to be a player making the most goal scoring opportunities... which is an almost meaningless stat as depending on who is making the numbers it can count as anything from passing it to a guy who ends up one on one with a keeper to a goalkeeper who passed to a cb who takes a shot from 70 yards.

List the number of one man teams, teams that pass every single ball through that player on every attack, where that player also takes every freekick(of which all can usually be called a goal scoring opportunity as long as it's not smashed straight out.

Stat = useless, stat + a little context = a fairly predictable story.
