FIFA World Cup 2014 - Semi-finals [8th - 9th July] **spoilers**

Not sure why people put Messi on such a pedestal. Seems to have been quite average compared to many other players this World Cup.

Its quite hard to shine when your a very marked man though. Holland had 2 people on him immediately almost every time he had the ball in an almost bouncer like fashion with another hanging back a little in case he evaded them.

EDIT: Infact if it wasn't for that I think the Dutch could possibly have won the game maybe - it was dragging their game down a bit making sure they never left him free to do much.

The reason the Dutch sucked was what they did when they were on the ball, when frankly Messi wasn't at all involved in the game. Kuyt with probably 99% of touches took the ball towards his own goal, breaking... pass to Kuyt, attack stops in it's tracks and he finds a backwards pass. Sneijder could pass someone in behind... but wait, he can see the goal, he'll shoot instead. Robben was poor but he only had 6 touches of the ball in the first half and attempted 1 shot. RVP attempted no shots... this is classic signs of the midfield failing miserably to actually get the ball to the attackers. RVP did nothing wrong, but was not given any chance to do anything right all game.

Robben's movement wasn't poor, but the delivery to him was almost non existent, though he had a few chances to pass RVP in instead of trying to run through 4 players. He got a bit "this is my chance to win it" and fluffed a few key moments, like his best chance to shoot he took like 2 extra needless touches.

Messi had nothing to do with why the Dutch were poor, utter lack of quality in Kuyt, Sneijder being poor as he had been throughout the tournament. RVP/Robben of course were up against decent(ish) defence but given delivery they would have scored... you can't do anything without the ball. Kuyt/Sneijder don't have that excuse, plenty of the ball and chose the wrong thing on almost every occassion over 120minutes.... the result is almost no meaningful chances to score.

I honestly don't know how LvG failed to see how completely awful the team was looking since he was starting Kuyt. Guzman's energy, pace and significantly more quality than Kuyt WAS much more effective in the first game, yet doesn't get a look in. Depay looked so much more dangerous and direct than Kuyt, again, no where to be seen. Nothing like changing one striker, for another striker, when the midfield is incapable of getting them the ball.

I agree, midfield was not playing the ball forward enough, yes it's risky to risk posession, but the defence seemed quite reasonable today...

Hope for Germany to annihilate ARG in the final. They deserve to win, not happy to say this as a Dutch since they are our rival, but I really like their team, their midfield, their attackers, and their defenders, disciplined, like to attack, hell I probably remember more of them than my own country's team. Hope Özil gets a goal in the final, I know the statistics don't favour him, but the chaos he causes against the other team('s defence) in invaluable imho.

I was reading a book with it on in the background, I had the commentary on so I would know if something happened. Probably looked up about 5 times the whole game.

Not a massive surprise that Netherlands went out. It was always going to be a luck of the draw type of game. Argentina were set up so deep and didn't want to play at all and Holland lack the quality in most of the team to break that down.

Out of the whole team the only two players who are genuinely top class were Robben and RvP and they had done about as well as they could expect to in this WC.

The final is going to be another bore fest with Argentina doing exactly the same thing and hoping that Messi can do something special at some point.

Not saying the Dutch were poor due to Messi but that they further hampered their own efforts by maintaining the ability to almost literally frog march him off the ball any time he was even vaguely a threat - they weren't taking any chances of him getting free and putting in a late winner which I think ultimately hurt the fluidity and forward pressure of their game (which they were already struggling with) at least as much if not more than it deflected the threat from Messi.

I was really disappointed with the way Netherlands played. I was hoping they would start attacking more, but they only became more defensive.

In a way, perhaps it's good the Dutch didn't end up in the final v Germany? It would have probably been a slow snoozefest where the Dutch try to slow the game with 5 or 6 at the back again anyway. :-/

I hope LvG doesn't play so negative/cautiously at Utd, but we'll have to wait and see.

Amazing contrast in games. First semi was an absolute thriller and then this one was a total bore.

Hoping for a good final. Ger hammering Argentina 8-0 would be good enough.

I wouldn't bet on it, Argentina will frustrate them like they have done every other team whilst at the same time creating virtually nothing themselves. Another 1-2 goal borefest imo hopefully to Germany for at least being a decent attacking side.

Anyone seen the video that Vlaar's penalty was actually in? Quite interesting but looks like he got a slight touch on it which spun it towards goal, the original video makes you think it was a goal though :p
