I think the referee needs to blow and stop play right away as well, it's stupid playing on for 1-2mins and then pulling everything back.

Yeah, it's meant for howlers. That's the decision they've made so they need to apply that (some may think it should be applied differently, but that's life). Hence why eg. the Ronaldo pen last night, where some would argue pen and some would argue dive, shouldn't have been touched by VAR either way imo. But they've torpedoed that with the decision with the first pen today.

In cricket (admittedly not when it was first implemented but once it had matured they came to the idea) they now have Umpires Call where if the decision is within the margin of error of the equipment they stick with the original call of the umpire be it out or not out.

There needs to be the same sort of equivalent in this, let the ref make a call as normal go to VAR if you want but if it's not obviously wrong stick with whatever the Ref said. Doing 100 slow mo's etc makes it always look worse than it was.
