FIFA World Cup 2018 - Quarter-finals [6/7 July] **spoilers**

If we made the semis and got knocked out by Croatia, would it be considered a successful World Cup for us?

I think so.

Just winning a penalty shoot out is reason enough to call it a success, given we don't have to constantly hear about how long it's been since we last won one anymore.

Ish. Honestly our run to the semis would have been the easiest ever so it would be hard to objectively claim that its been a big success but it would be nice for the nation to get behind our team for once instead of turning on them the second something goes wrong.

Look back in history a lot of world cup winners have had an easy ride.

1998 France had an easy ride bar a penalty scraped win against Italy. By comparison our route to the final would have been Argentina, Holland and Brazil.

2002 Brazil had an easy ride bar England and a final against Germany (their route was even easier) who we demolished 5-1 the previous year.

2006 Italy had an easy ride till the Semi's but beat Germany and then France. Both on penalties and with the aid of a Zidane headbut.

2010 Spain was really the only team in the past 20 years that went through a real tough set of games to win the cup. Having to beat Portugal, Germany and Holland.

If the world cup was done as a league with say the top teams playing each other it would be more accurate but then the competition would go on for a year! There still needs reform however as it is a bit odd that losing our group has given us a far easier ride than the winner.

England's record against Sweden is woeful, I'm not confident at all.

Well, I guess that's an improvement on what you normally post.

They're playing as a decent team Sweden, and they could hurt us, however we should be comfortable against them. Unfortunately there are no easy games at a World Cup, regardless of who you're up against. Spain found that out.

Sweden is England's bogey team for sure. I will be surprised if they beat them.

I wonder if Uraguay will play against France like Columbia did against us and basically try and turn the game into a **** show.
