I'm currently trying to share my media with other computers on the network. I'm running Windows 8.1 and the other computers are win 7 and vista. I've managed to get streaming working so they can see and steam from inside media player but would like to be able to just browse the files and copy them to the other computers of they want. For some reason when browsing the files is just saying permission denied. If anyone can help I would be very grateful

Thanks

For some reason when browsing the files is just saying permission denied.

Sorry to sound like I'm taking the p, but have you got permissions? if you're browsing fine and it just randomly denies permission for certain things then it's simply that, you haven't set permission.

First time you try to access a network computer it should ask you for credentials, did you use your usual admin account? or have you set up another account for sharing purposes?

If you're using an admin account you really shouldn't have any problems accessing anything. If you're using an account you set up for sharing purposes you will need to set its permissions for the various shares.

I find using MMC.exe is easiest way of managing shares.

The other computers aren't asking for credentials at all, just saying they don't have permission. I'm using an admin account to try to set the sharing up and I've gone into the sharing tab and tried playing around with the settings on my videos library but even with everyone having read/write permissions it doesn't seem to work. As streaming works I'm assuming it's just a tick box/setting somewhere but can't seem to find anything.

I'll have a look at MMC.exe too

Sounds like HomeGroup services are trying to negotiate credentials.

Go to control panel's Network and Sharing Center.

Make sure your network is set as a "private network" on all PCs.

Then on the left hand side go to "Change advanced sharing settings".

For "Private (current profile)" make sure everything is enabled. Under homegroup settings, set the option to "use user accounts and passwords to connect to other computers".

Then open my computer (or any explorer window) and type this in the address bar:

\\name-of-remote-computer\c$

you should get a username & password prompt. Enter username in the following format:

name-of-remote-computer\remote-admin-user-name (example if the computer's name is johns-pc and the username is john, enter johns-pc\john as the username.)

enter usual password for that account.

If you still don't get a password prompt you can try deleting your credentials for the remote computer. In control panel, find Credential Manager. Look for the remote computer in the list and delete any saved credentials relating to it.

all pc's need passwords and have admin accounts setup and all above also, plus all must have unique names as well, so none named the same as your good to go, it's easy if they are all the same o/s, just takes longer if not but still works fine
