Films about apocalypse / end of the world

Most people seem to think the postman is crap but me think its a good film well worth a watch

It's a weird film, it's far far too long and has some stupid scenes in it. The good scenes are fantastic, I think I've heard about a fan made shorter cut of it before, which knocks off about 90 minutes from the film, sounds interesting!

Stephen King's The Stand is a 4 part end of the world film

What about 'The Stand' by Stephen King??

Okay not a Movie, but the bridged version is 2x 3 hour 'TV Movies' or split into 6x 1 hour long Episodes...

^Pipped you to it my friend..

Already been mentioned, but I've always had a soft spot for 'Cyborg', JCVD is in it :D

After I first watched threads 13 years ago it messed me up a bit and gave me a morbid curiousity.. so for nuke films...

Threads (obviously)
The War Game
The Day After
Testament
By Dawn's Early Light
WarGames
Thirteen Days
Fail Safe
Jericho (TV series)
On The Beach
Dr. Strangelove (comedy)
Terminator 2

and there's probably more I've forgotten. Sleepless nights after the first two in particular! :p

I know a few people who have said that, and to think they used to show it in schools! Easily the most depressing film I've ever seen, and quite hard hitting, it must have been a shock to the system for a lot of people, especially when it was released (Cold War, nuke threats, etc).

For anyone considering it; don't be put off by its age or lack of any well known actors, it is well worth seeing.

And in the Post before mine too!! :D

Granted I was scanning this thread, and looking on IMDB at the same time!, so the 5 minutes between yours and mine probly happened whilst I was doing that!! ;) :D :) :p

La Jetee by Chris Marker - recognised last night in the In Memoriam section of the Oscars.

Made in 1961 and was/is miles ahead of it's time. It set the tone for any time travel-type apocalypse film, and films like Twelve Monkeys, Source Code and Looper have borrowed heavily from it.

It's a half hour long piece of black and white stills with narration. Sounds boring, but when considering its age it's genuinely mind blowing how impressive it is. The original is in French with subtitles, but the English version is just as good (I'm pretty sure the narrator is either the same on both versions, or just very similar).

Akira is set post world war III a-bombed Tokyo but tbh city has mostly been rebuilt since. Still amazing anime if you've never seen it though.
