After watching a bit of RJ and BvG (or any other London vlogger) has anyone else noticed they have adjusted how they filter in certain situations?

I've taken one or two maneuvers on board at least. I don't always have to or even get the chance to but certain times of the day I'm glad I don't really use the car that much
 
I don't watch their vids or any others tbf

Just do my own thing,only tend to filter if I'm late or its safe to do so,otherwise I'm not fussed

There was a massive long road on the way into Manchester went on for miles and was choca with cars idk how they cope in cars today,I was far quicker filtering in and around them,thank God for motorbikes !!!!

Edit: most of it just comes with experience IMO,and no matter how good you are something will always crop up to test you

Yup.
You can pick up a few things from watching others, but TBH it's often shot from a very different perspective and it's a completely different ball game when you're on your own bike. What you can see with your peripheral vision will be far more that what a GoPro can show.

Most of it just depends on your individual circumstances and the bike you're on. Mine is pretty tall, heavy and wide, so I won't be as nippy as a CG125, for example, or even how I would filter on my Cruiser.

So long as you can do it safely, go out and enjoy.
 
If I'm making good progress I don't do it,what's the point, you're only saving a few seconds but putting yourself at greater danger. you see some do it no matter what the traffics like and to fast. If it slow or stopped then I will, but only at about 15-20 mph tops giving me time to spot the lane hoppers etc

I've spent years riding into the centre of Manchester every day, and suppose I have my own style. I'm no where near as aggressive as some of the vloggers, I just take it nice and easy. Filtering saves me, on average, 30 mins each way over driving. Plus, it feels so good to just ride effortlessly past stationary traffic.
 
I wonder how much riding with/without a camera influences you/affects your riding/filtering though

id say most folks play up to the camera,just so it looks good on youtube,take away the camera and they would ride like a nun
 
I only started riding because there's a possibility of filtering through heavy London traffic but as soon as I got my scooter and then my motorbike I realised how difficult and dangerous filtering really is. Although I was inspired by the likes of Royal Jordanian I would never filter as aggressively as he does through moving traffic. If it's slow or stationary then I will filter but if we are making progress near the speed limit I won't. What annoys me a lot is how many bikers weave in between traffic or aggressively overtake me, food delivery riders and couriers are the worst offenders for this, I used to try and keep up with others but now I just let them pass and make progress at my own pace.
 
I've seen to many idiots changing lanes without indicating or even checking their mirrors for the sake of half a car's length, so I tend only to filter though stationary or very slow moving traffic now. It makes me look like a wimp compared to the youtube vids, but I'm alive and my skeleton is still all original, which is quite nice.

I always thought when watching Baron Von G that it looked like he was going through really tiny gaps. But since getting my own headcam I've noticed that the whole 180 degree lense really makes things look different.

So I'm not trying to go through tiny gaps but sometimes it looks that way!

Very much this, on my footage on the yi the gaps look tiny but there's actually room for a goldwing to get through! :D
 
I love filtering through busy junctions, so satisfying. I do watch a ton of RJ and I think it has helped to know what to look for in terms of unpredictable motorists. I think the best advice I've got from a Youtube video is that if a gap looks dodgy at all just don't bother and wait.

Guess it depends on if you post it for other people to watch and if people actually watch you. You're right, Baron/RJ probably do play up a bit to the camera, but doesn't every 'entertainer'? :). I don't, I forget the camera is on 90% of the time, just got it on for safety / or to catch anything cool or dodgy. I also don't post most of my stuff, that's not what I got a camera for really, tis for my own entertainment more than anything.
 
yeah id say it must play a certain part I suppose

its great whizzing past lines of cars though,even better on the motorway,just keep your witts about you

and do try to whack a car mirror or two,such joy
 
I filter all the time, otherwise I might as well drive! Riding is a greater risk to me personally and also, I get wet, so I'm sure as hell going to make the most of every opportunity to enjoy/make progress.

I don't filter through moving traffic live some people though weaving between lanes, unless there's two people going side by side at 25mph, then a dab of throttle and I'm through.

Watch baron and RJ but doesn't make me do anything differently, reassuring that I'm not as cheeky as some people if anything :p

Plus London is very different to every city let alone small towns.
 
I've picked up some of the routes that they will look to take. If I was trying to get down two lanes and the path narrows that used to be me stopped. Now I will look to see if there is a gap on the outside/filter lane to get round the narrow bit.

I would only ever do this in stationary traffic though.
 
It's rare I need to filter on my commute but it does come in handy when the ring road is completely grid locked, I use it loads on M way journeys though without it my trip to and from Brighton over the weekend would have taken an extra hour at least!
 
Lane splitting is fair game too, so long as it's done safely.

I know people who won't do it full stop but obviously those people don't ride in cities. Again you might as well drive otherwise as you won't get anywhere.
 
I filter past everything I can, whats the point in sitting behind cars on a bike? I quite enjoy how raged the motorbike haters get when you go pootling past heavy traffic they've been sat in for ages.
 
Filtering and 'lane split' wherever possible, as above whats the point of sitting around, thats the whole advantage of a bike.
My cut off rule is 50mph on the motorway, I see people still filtering when the traffic is going faster than that and also people might think 50mph is too fast, each to their own ;)
 
That's the thing, there'll always be someone filtering faster than you, and normally someone filtering slower! I often pass people sitting in a queue of easy filterable traffic, but on the other hand I don't like filtering past traffic when there's traffic coming the other way, I'll let them pass unless there's a decent gap - I see loads of people basically riding into head on traffic.
