Try saying summons are useful in 20 more hours of gameplay. They die in 2-3 hits and you can't control them. I summoned the 2nd strongest it took ALL my mana only to die within the first 10 seconds even though I was healing it. Its more effective to use your other 2 characters since they are controllable and will do way more damage and won't die so quickly. And when the summon uses its special attack before its time is up you have to site through 1 minute of CG everytime (looks good the first few times but gets old fast) and you can't even skip it.
I say they blow because to field it you have to sacrifice both your other 2 party members who would do more damage together then anything your summon could do therefore it means they are useless. The only time I used a summon was Belias and the next 2 your obtain the first few times to see what they were like and second because you were forced to summon him to advance in the story.
Also a tip for anyone playing it right now it confused me at first so it may confuse others since its not very clear. Its about the types of armor you can equip:
-For spell casters equip magical armor and staffs or rods since they raise your magic stats quite a bit. Which in turn make your spells a lot more powerful.
-For swordsman/knights use heavy armor and either sword and shield or a 2 handed sword/spear
-For thief/rouge type build use light armor and daggers with shields equiped which will raise your evasion and speed by a whole lot. with higher speed it means you will attack more quickly and have a higher chance of getting multiple hits.
I made the mistake of using Heavy armor equiped with a mages cap and it lowered my strength by quite a bit, but of course your free to play how you like.
