Hi all, I have this game for the PS1 and have never got to the point of completing it, nearly got there but lost the save  now that I live quite far from anything in particular during the week I'm thinking of getting this game for my laptop, however I'm not prepared to pay for it and then find out it wont run on vista, anyone got this game that can either calrify if it works or not?

that would be great as this is one seirouly classic game :)

I've never used Vista before so i cannot answer what you are asking, but i did install this game onto my laptop a few years back, thinking fondly of it like yourself.
Although i did complete it when i had it for the PS1 (and completed around 50% of the game again until i got too bored), i was really looking forward to playing it again. But so many years after its original release, it was really disappointing.
Regarding compatibility though, like ive said, ive never used vista, only ran it on XP, but i do remember having some problems controlling the game using the built in numpad on my laptop. I also seem to recall not being able to map any controls to a controller, but im not sure if someone has managed this yet. I considered buying a usb numpad just for this game, but decided not to in the end.

I read a small bit about the mapping problems with num pads on laptop, luckily I have a vostro 1700 which has a full sized keyboard with a separate numpad. Thanks for the heads up tho, also I hope I dont fall into the sma category a yourself with the disappointment or re-running the game.

I've completed the game 4+ times myself on the PS1 - got it for the PC but it just isn't the same.

Get an old ps1 and the game of the bay, played it through again recently and it's just as good as it was back then :)

I think it would take a bit of fiddling around to get it working on Vista. There's a bit of a community supporting the PC version, so there's probably someone out there that will be able to help if you can't get it to work.

Funny thing is, the easier way to get it to work on a PC is to get the PS1 version and use an emulator. But unfortunately that's illegal because you need an image of the PS1 BIOS to do it.

when you both say that 'its just not the same' on the pc, whats the main difference compared to the ps1 version if any, or is it the 'feel' of the game?

I do still have the actuall ps1 game and my old ps1 lying around the parents house somewhere, but last i seen was a bit of a sorry state tho

i didnt know there was a version of ff7 on the psp, that is quite interesting in a way, if I had money to burn that is...

Just tried to play it on vista and it installs but doesn't work:mad:

It loads the game but not any of the movies. I can see the main menu where you get the option for "New Game and Continue?" but it doesn't load the movie with Aries and the train at the begining. Tried compatibility mode for xp and 98 as well and it still doesn't work.

Damn you got me wanting to play this game again, and i can't!:p
Might have a look about on the net tomorrow to see if i can get it working.
I had it installed on my laptop not long ago which was XP, or it might just be my pc.

Just include this for a bit of a chuckle. Uses DirectX 5, makes me feel old.

ahh thats a bit of a bummer to be honest, was really getting my hopes up  but maybe there is a way to get it going on vista, if some bright spark found a way.

I do appologise greatly for un-intentionally making you want to play it again (in a sarcastic tone) waahahah now you shall not sleep because of the urge

You need the truemotion codec for the movie clips (on the disc but is hopelessly outdated and probably won't work on Vista anyway). You also need to get the chocobo patch for the game, otherwise the game cannot be completed (game crashes at the chocobo gold saucer races).

I always get really far on this game, end up giving up then stop playing

Then ill start again, and i go in circless

tbh only ff game i loved and actually finished was 10

Could you install the free version of VMWare, and install a legal copy of Win98 (or whatever) as a virtual machine? Then install FFVII in the VM. I'm sure the hardware requirements are so low, it might emulate pretty well?

I've managed to complete, VII, VIII, IX, X and I am happily going through XII at the moment.

Saying that with VII I left it for about 8 months as I could not for the life of me beat Demon Wall! Haha, ah well did it in the end. :D

I was a PS1 boy, so did FF7 a couple of times (127hrs on the first play through!), FF8 which was still quite good (but preferred the materia system TBH), and FF9 which although I enjoyed loads, never finished as I left uni and started working=no gameage time. Still got the save as long as the memory card isn't FUBAR and I plan to play again one day.

There was a patch to run this game on XP (The Chocobo Patch?). Instal the game as normal, instal the Chocobo Patch and instal the codec needed to play the movies. The codec details can be found by using a little codec app called Gspot (just google Gspot it will be one of the first results honest). The app will load a movie from the dir and tell you what codec is missing from your PC that the file requires in order to play it. Then google the exact codec name and instal.

Once you have done all that go into the FF7 dir right click the .exe click compatibility and click "run in XP serice pack 2 compatibility" (something along that). Click OK. then run the game.

Hope that helps.

if you own the disks and a ps1 you can use an emulator. (you still need to dl the ps1 rom's, but ass you own a ps1 you can claim then as your legal back ups)

Thanks guys for the help, getting loads of ideas now, and hearing about people completeing it is getting to me :p I MUST DO IT!!!! Right I remember a long time ago when I got my first pc trying to get an emulator and I always had problems with getting the ROMS but that was like 8 years ago and I didnt have a clue then.

So I'm quite liking this emulator thing, can anyone point to where I can download the rom I need, possibly a good emulator aswell? Then I will be able to play all my other PS1 games which includes FF8 which I also got close but not completed, think i do have the save game for that one tho :D

Thanks in advance

We can't point you to where to get the rom as it's illegal. The emulator itself is legal so I think I'm allowed to say epsxe is a good one.

Ahh right thanks, only thought of that after I posted, so I shall begin to google like theres no tomorrow :D shame my PS1 games are at my parents...have to wait to the weekend to try them out.

*thinks of FF7 for next 2 days* lol
