*** Final Fantasy XIII ***

Well a quick question for rp or any one who has finished the game really, Im on chapter 11 and now i could progress however all my characters average hp is 1700 now is it worth grinding building that up along with the rest of their stats or should i move on and expect to die allot?

Reason i ask is as im enjoying the story tons and tons i kinda just wanna keep on doing it rather than grinding atm >.<

Just keep going, you will top out your current crystarium levels before you reach the end of the chapter (or be very close to doing) anyway.

Well, I tried to get the Growth Egg last night. (I am at the point just before chapter 12)
My party was Vanille/Fang/Hope in SAB/SEN/MED and they had ~7000/7500/5500hp and Vanille had a Marlboro Wand level 24 or so, not fully upgraded.

I put on Aegisol and Fortisol and started the fight, first hit went good, but only just recovered and started spamming Death and I yelled out when it worked after only 6 tries so changed to RAV/SEN/MED and just had to kill the little guys.

But the problem was that Vanille Magic is a little low so she didn’t do a lot of damage with Firaga so it took a while and after a few minutes the shrouds wore off and they killed me @$%#$#

So the problem was magic power to kill the little guys but I had no more CP left but I could upgrade the Marlboro Wand which gave an extra 200 Magic to Vanille and tried again knowing I was close to getting it.

But the next 20 fights or so ended with the party dying from screech  and just as I was about to give up Death worked and I took on the little guys again, this time I was a bit faster and managed to kill one just before the shrouds wore off which was just enough to survive, Fang had only 20hp left at one point but I managed to kill them all, final time was 7:32 minutes.

So now I have the following accessories:
Light: Sprint Shoes/Connoisseur Catalog/Growth Egg
Fang: Sprint Shoes/Survivalist Catalog/Warrior Wrist
Hope: Sprint Shoes/Collectors Catalog/Diamond Bangle

Any other accessories that are recommended to replace the warrior wrist and Diamond bangle?

I am really enjoying how this game started to develop post chapter 9, as others have said it does feel a bit like a tutorial up to that point, but the advantages of learning about paradigm shifts during this process is great.

I am now working through the chapters and have found the advice on here really useful.

I have a question about accessories, do you generally stick with base types for HP etc until some of the better accessories become available?

Do you think its worth upgrading any of these, or just wait and save upgrade items and money until you have the better accessories are available?

I generally am aiming for +MAG for casters alongside +HP and then putting +STR & +HP on commando's

Running with LIGHTNING/FANG/HOPE seems to be working fairly well, have been upgrading Hopes weapon until the ones I want for Light and Fang become available.

In the earlier chapters a +STR/+MAG/+HP one makes a big difference +50STR with 300STR is a big difference but now I have ~1800STR it makes less of a difference and therefore I use other things like catalogs for better drops and sprint shoes for auto haste

I have never upgraded any of the +STR/+MAG because by the time you upgrade it a better one can be found or bought.

I never bother with +HP's they are a waste of a slot imho.

I much prefer the damage reduction items (like Royal/Imperial Armlet).

This give a constant benefit for the duration of a fight, whereas a HP mod only lets you take say 500HP more damage, before it's effect is nullified.

Think I have mind set up as follows:

Fang: Genji Glove / Royal Armlet (15% resist to Phys/Mag) / Imperial Armlet (20% Resist to Phys/Mag) / +STR Item

Light: Growth Egg (CPx2) / Royal Armlet (15% resist) / +STR Item / Connoisseur Catalogue (more Rare drops)

Hope: Blessed Amulet (Auto Faith) / Royal Armlet (15% resist) / +MAG Item / + MAG Item

Gives Fang great tanking ability, while hitting hard as a COM.

Light is my balanced character, so she has a basic defence, a small str boost, and then other slots used as utilities.

Hope is small defence upgrade and a ton of MAG boosting so he can tear through enemies with epic magic attacks.

Still need to get my Sprint shoes sorted out, then i'll be replacing the +STR/MAG buffs with those.

Should you not have 4 accessory slots each by now? I agree, the Bangles are a waste.

The best combo for accessories by far (imo) is adding 2 items that give a bonus attribute. i.e. adding Energy Sash (increase TP bar) and Speed Sash (increases ATB bar) together adds the bonus attribute of "Random Instant Chain" (Randomly fill the chain bar in 1 shot so next shot initiates stagger).

I think some of the objects I found that enable this were: Energy Sash, Speed Sahs, Champions Badge.

Also, something I read is that you should never have Connoisseur Catalog and Collector's Catalog equipped at the same time. One increases the chance of Rare Drops, one Normal Drops. They cannot both have an effect on the outcome of a battle. When I fought the Adamantoise for the Ingots, having only Collectors equipped seemed to definitely increase the yield (although I appreciate that could be random due to the nature of drops).

Maybe someone with the guide can clarify.

Grind after the game. In hindsight I gained so little in grinding as at that point you mainly get CP which, as someone mentioned, you will naturally end up maxing out, assuming you fight all the mandatory enemies during the rest of the game

Whats to do after the game then?

What is their to grind for? I'm only on chapter 9 now but never knew there was going to be side missions etc.
There are 65 missions, some are part of the main storyline but others are optional and, if mission 55 is anything to go by, VERY hard.

@rp2000, I read somewhere (Gamefaqs most likely) that equipping two collectors catalog do not stack but equipping different ones does help for both drops, if I have time I will look for a FAQ that sheds some light into this matter, I do not want to go trap farming only to find the drop rate is still default.

Random instant stagger is added to the list of attributes when equipping speed sash, energy sash or susvivalist catalog, but only one is required, that's why I have the susvivalist catalog equipped on Fang as she has the Taming Pole which has stagger lock.

Oh, I only have 3 slots, doesn't the 4th come from the 10th level or from a role that isn't a default role?

Just worked out I need these, just for the accessory grind:

19x Perovskite
4x Dark Matter
5x Uraninite
2x Adamantite

And as far as I know only Dark Matter is farmable, although that would take killing a Long Gui... in which case I might aswell just try to buy the Dark Matters :p

Stacking doesn't work but there is still confusion about equipping different catalog as the added entry on the right of the screen is different for each catalog you equip.

I forget where I read it now, it was by chance when I was reading for a strategy on beating a Long Gui. And I found by having only Collector equipped I was getting far more Ingots than when I had both equipped, but that is anecdotal and not scientific, in any way.

The little brother (Shao Long Gui) drops the Dark Matters. He is not as hard to beat as Long Gui.

Have you characters get to Level 5 and semi decent weapons and it will be doable.

I've found errors in the strategy guide (It says speed sash is in the boost synthesis group - it isn't)

Also sprint shoes seems pointless for boss fights because it doesn't last very long, best for grinding imo.

I noticed something with those Auto-Whatever items, probably been noticed before though, but the whole summon animation rubbish if you don't press select to cancel it will eat away at the buff time, which blows, it should have been halted until you're fighting again.

Side note - got really lucky this morning, 7 Adamantortoises - 7 Platinum Ingots :D Bought all 19 of those Perovskite, just need another 5 ingots for the Adamantite and Uraninite then just need Dark Matter (:/).

I think they last 1 minute at lv.1 and two minutes or longer at Lv.* (i do notice a difference in the time they are active when upgraded or is that a placebo effect?)

No I think you are right, as I upgraded my Auto-Faith talisman for Hope and it lasts a fair while now.

Mission 24 is easy although it only gives you 6000gil. It only takes about 45secs though.
I got the battle time down to 30 seconds but you also lose time walking to the statue, activating and waiting before being able to walk.

But it is an easy way to gather some money for upgrades but I think for serious amounts of money Adamatioses are better but you need to be VERY strong or have a lot of patience with the Death spell. (but I haven't done this yet)

Q for the advanced farmers:
Would it be possible to take on a Adamatiose with ~7500hp spamming Death in the same configuration as the one for Mission 55?
