Rightio,

Budget has changed slightly now and I got a 5870 cheaper. So, I need the rest!

Budget - £730 for everything bar the graphics card.

Need Monitor but not a keyboard, mouse, or Windows.

Was thinking of this spec and throwing in a SSD to make it snappier.

Anyone do any better, its for game playing mainly. Also, I realise a lot of that's out of stock, just hoping it comes back into stock before I order on the 6th.

Ok, so added in that MB and the PSU brings it to £40 under budget. That will give me the option to crossfire in the future right? Anything else I could upgrade that would seriously improve the build? Not in the habit of just wasting money for the sake of it. I wouldn't mind a case upgrade.

So, current build.

Lovely build for AMD but I'm an Intel person myself :)

I quite fancied the I5 route, but then crossfire becomes more of an issue and I'm fearful about the upcoming socket changes and how upgradable that will leave me.

I think I'm going to stick with the Silverstone case and use the extra money for a larger HDD. 50mb internet soon!

Was also thinking of changing the fans in the case seeing as its going to be in the front room. How noisy is the CPU coolers I've choosen? (EDIT - 17.2 - 39.0 dB) Not sure how loud that is in real world terms, quieter than the Graphics card I believe.

Would these be ok to put in the case? http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FG-036-AK&groupid=701&catid=57&subcat=4

Thanks for the help :)

Ahhhhhhhh!

Good points, I want this case to last a bit. 1tb extra or a nicer case.

Anyone got any experience of the Silverstone, is it a budget case? Would spending the extra 40 on a new case be worth it for features and cooling.

In a case I want room, airflow, build quality. Just not sure of the difference between £40 and £80

Thanks for the advice, I think I'll look into a better case design then. I'm so excited, all the money comes in on the 6th and its being ordered then! My last tower was a Athlon XP 1800 with a ATI 9600. Went to Laptops after that because I got them for free!

A case it is!

Hi!

The reason I went the AMD route was so upgrading in the future was a bit easier.

New CPUs will prob use the same socket. Board allows me to Crossfire in the future if needed.

I very much doubt that the new AMD Bulldozer chips coming in 2011 will use AM3... I will be very shocked if they do...

In the meantime, the intel spec I gave you will be far superior, which is annoying I know as I am an AMD fanboy :p

Shhh you, its taken me days to come to this spec! I won't be able to Crossfire will I?

I knew I shouldn't have posted anything!

I'm looking at the i5 route now with the Cm690 case which I much prefer.

God. Some one make this decision for me please

Cases are always down to taste tbh m8... as far as the CPU goes, i5 will be fine for gaming & still faster than the AMD if you wanna save yourself a bit ;)

Yeah, pretty settled on that case, not sure what the difference is between the lite and the advanced though. Only thing I can see is External SATA dock. Not sure I'd ever use that.

I've been looking at benches between the 955 and i5 but I do plan to OC, so, are there any benches showing them at an average OC. Say 3.5 for the 955 and 4 for the i5.

Right, really stuck now.

Both in budget.

955 or i5.

Upgrade comments, in future could I not upgrade to an i7 which would give me a fair boost or do people feel I'll be much better with the AMD route for upgrades. Might an i5 set-up last me longer anyway?

To many options!

Hi,

Some excellent points. I think I'll stick to the AMD route then and put the money saved away for possibly an SSD or another 5770 in future. I think Xfire in the future will give me a much larger boost than any CPU upgrade. Seeing as its a gaming machine, this makes much more sense to me. I'd also like a few more fans in the case which with the AMD budget would allow.

I know that but the one he quoted was a i7 9series and not an i7 8 series.

No I didn't!

Anyway, Really stuck now, i5 760 or Amd 955, not to much difference in price. Both set-ups will support xfire, both can be upgraded with better procs.

Although the AMD will possibly give me a better upgrade path, the i5 will give me better current performance and still an upgrade path with the Socket LGA1156 i7's.

Decisions decisions.

More input please!

its cheaper than a i5 build, and strong rumours that the next gen bulldozer CPU will still be AM3 fitment.

Works out to be like £17 cheaper yeah. If it is still Am3, I'll be laughing, if not, I'll be weeping at everyone else's lovely i5's and cursing you! ;)
