Final Specification

I've kept it quite a bit under budget so you still have options, everything should be compatible under Linux and the graphics card isn't hugely powerful (now) but more than capable of most tasks with ease outside of gaming. I haven't seen one of those keyboards for ages now, takes me back to high school, solid as a rock but overly 'clicky' for me. :)

Thanks. The only problem with the keyboard is that it costs a lot to get posted. (It is over 2kg :p). When I told my Dad this he was amazed; but considering the build quality, and the general strength of the Model M keyboards, it is hardly surprising. I have been waiting for months to get one, and I will hopefully have one in a week's time.

Edit: What I want in terms of graphics is simply for the computer to be able to handle video, etc. (and if I was forced to, limited 3D), without stuttering. I have never really played games on the computer (since I was about 7 years old), and my recent (well over the past 2 years) problems with my ATi Radeon 9800 have meant I have no desire to start. I want graphics that can leave me with a good, and smooth experience of using the computer with dual monitors, and can handle limited 3D.

I would go with the above spec, you can't really get any better for your money. As for the keyboard - WOW! Reminds me of some very old computers still lying around at school.

The graphics card is very, very roughly maybe double the power of a 9800pro so for anything 2D and for 3D outside of gaming it is easily sufficient.

I did just pick the case because it was the first of your two choices, maybe check in the Case Central sub-forum to see if they have any further recommendations as I don't know huge amounts about cases. :)

Thanks for all the help.

It wasn't a lack of power with the ATi Radeon 9800; there is some form of problem to do with overheating (as far as I can gather), where any form of 3D causes it to crash to a black screen. I tried to fix it for a while, but now I am getting the new system, I will just leave this as it is (it is fine for normal usage), and have my current computer as some form of spare. (Most likely I will use it as my Windows machine).

Edit: What other things will I need if I am going to build this computer? Will I need thermal paste, and something to tidy the cables with? I am very new to this really, it is my first full build.

From what you've said, you dont do any major 3d work whatsoever (ie CAD, gaming etc), just videos and OS work ?

No need for anything fancy, just a good generally fast system, thus i suggest something like :

Abit IL9 Pro (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard £45.99
(£54.04) £45.99
(£54.04)
GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC5300C4 667MHz Value DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GX22GB5300DC) £44.99
(£52.86) £44.99
(£52.86)
Asus GeForce EN7100GS 256MB Turbo Cache DDR TV-Out/DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail £20.99
(£24.66) £20.99
(£24.66)
Western Digital Caviar SE16 320GB 3200AAKS SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM £45.99
(£54.04) £45.99
(£54.04)
OCZ StealthXStream 600w Silent SLI Ready ATX2 Power Supply £49.99
(£58.74) £49.99
(£58.74)
Optiarc NEC AD7170S Serial ATA 18x18 DVD±RW Dual Layer ReWriter (Black) - OEM £16.99
(£19.96) £16.99
(£19.96)
Intel Core 2 Duo E4300 "LGA775 Allendale" 1.80GHz (800FSB) - Retail £68.99
(£81.06) £68.99
(£81.06)
Lian-Li PC V1000 PLUS Aluminium Midi-Tower - Black £109.99
(£129.24) £109.99
(£129.24)
Sub Total : £403.92
Shipping cost assumes delivery to UK Mainland with:
City Link Parcel Next Day (Delivered Mon-Fri)
(This can be changed during checkout) Shipping : £10.95
VAT is being charged at 17.5% VAT : £72.60
Total : £487.47

And to answer the above question, all cables should come with the motherboard, all the fans with the case, the CPU is retail, so includes a cooler, and this comes with adequate thermal paste.

A friend has recommended this component:

[Link]

Is this a good idea? It says that the component is quiet, and I would like the system to be relatively quiet. I understand that the Intel stock cooling is rather good (interestingly from the Mr Billing videos :p); would this be a well spent £17.61?

This is my current idea for the computer then:

Will this be fine considering that I am in possession (or will be in several days [if everything goes well]) of a keyboard (also one can assume my possession of a mouse)?

I'm not 100% about the Arctic Freezer 7, it is better than stock but apparantly the quality can be a bit variable so it is either great or just decent. Other than that the specification looks good but I guess I would say that since it is more or less the same as what I specified. :)

You'll love the monitors, my dual 19 Dells look good on Ubuntu. I'm eyeing up a 20 to stick in the middle of my two, but can't afford that yet :(

Bit late telling you now but I think it can be any time up to around 4pm and you should still get next day delivery but it depends how busy they are in terms of picking the parts. :)

Thanks, I'm getting it delivered a bit later anyway. (I have my final GCSE examination on Thursday, so I don't want yet another distraction prior to it :p).

Well, it's ordered.

It will be at my house (and ready to build :p) on Monday 25/06/2007.

I am looking forward to it. (I also ordered a Powerball, which will be great).

Thanks again!
