Hi guys.....

Am just about there with chosing all the bits for my new build - have to say that I have changed my mind about each component about 5 times there's so much choice!

Could you cast your eyes over it and confirm it all looks compatible and suggest some alternatives to any suspect pieces......I also include a few specific questions at the bottom. It will be a gaming rig. No immediate plans for SLi or overclocking, but will probably overclock at some point. Want Sli capability.

Cheers!

CPU - Intel core duo E6600 Conroe c£200
CPU cooler - Tuniq Tower c£35
Motherboard - Asus P5N32-E SLI nforce 680 c£153
Memory - GeIL 2x1Gb PC6400C4 800Mhz GX22GB6400UDC - c£123
Graphics - NVidea BFG 8800 GTX - c£400
HDD - 2 x WD Raptor 150Gb in RAID 0 - c£321
Power supply - Enermax Galaxy 850 Watt modular - £175
Case - Silverstone TJ-09 Black with window
Monitor - Dell 2407WFP 24" - c£517
Sound card - Creative X-Fi Xtreme - c£26
Opitcal - Samsung SATA SH-183LBEBN - c£24
Mouse - Logitech G5 (2007 edition) - £50
Keyboard - Logitech G15 gaming keyboard - c£53
o/s - Windows XP professional c£94
Office - Office 2007 home and student - c£94
Fans - c£20
Fancing cables -c£20
Carriage - c£50

Total - £2,535

- Are the CPU/memory/motherboard all compatible and a decent choice?
- I want a decent case and power supply that will last and be as future proof as possible. Is the Silverstone case the best under £200 with decent cooling and looks?
- Is the Enermax Galaxy a top drawer power supply? Looks it!
- Need a few fans for the case - want LED ones that are silent (120mm) - can someone recommend some? Cheers!
- Keyboard - Want a decent gaming keyboard. Want illuminated keys and some macro keys. Decent short key strokes would be good as well - I have gone for the Logitech G15 - is this decent? How do people find it? Which other gaming keyboards are they?
- Have gone for XP professional - wise?

Thanks very much......getting very excited !!!

Nic

Looks good would get rid of the Raptors though, not worth it IMO

a pair of Seagates or the new 500GB WD drive can beat them easily, plus you get more storage! and it is cheaper

Would change the PSU to the Corsair 620w

G15 waste of money imo, its huge and no need for it all, im using a Saitek eclipse (Blue one) and its a nice keyboard, sturdy and the backlight is great for late gaming sessions :)

also a lot cheaper than the G15

regarding the psu im sure that its a great psu because enermax do make good psus, ive got the 600W noisetaker and its great

Same, I love my keyboard.

a lot of Corsair fans out there! Just don't think in a couple of years time that 620 watts will be enough! The Enermax at 850 watts seems much more future proof.

Still undecided about the keyboard...tempted by the following:

- Raptor K1 Professional Gaming-Grade Keyboard
- Logitech G15 gaming
- Saitek PZ30AU Eclipse Illuminated Keyboard
- Razer Tarantula Advanced Gaming Keyboard

What do you think?

Also may ditch the Raptors for a normal drive - that way I can stretch to the 27" Dell monitor !!!!! Would that be over kill or would 27" make gaming awesome?!

Looks like a super system spec you have!, IMO I would keep the 2 Raptors if you can afford them, as a couple of those in raid 0 would be untouchable in performance!. I think any 700/800W+ Tagan, Enermax would be a good investment, albeit the corsair 620w looks good value too :)

I have the following peripherals, and find them very well suited to my fav online games, mainly FPS: CoD 2, BF2, Red Orchestra :p

Razer DeathAdder Blue 2000dpi High Precision Gaming Mouse
QPad Gamer Mid Sense XXL
Saitek Eclipse 2 Illuminated Keyboard - Blue/Red/Purple

The motherboard is nice, but there are cheaper and just as good alternatives out there, the DS3 for example. However, I cannot really comment as the motherboard I have was hardly cheap, but I originally went for the DS3 but then it met a grizzly end rather quickly.

The keyboard and mouse option seems to be very pricey. There are better alternatives out there, and the Saitek is nice, I always like the Razar mice, and they are cheaper than the one you quoted.

Not sure on the case, as not got one myself, the Akasa Eclipse seems to be a popular choice, and is under £100.

Do you need Office? I read somewhere, on another post on the forums that there is a free alternative out there, if its a gaming rig then is this necessary? Other than that, pretty good. When Mishima arrives, he will no doubt point you in the direction of the Noctua range.

Already have but he's gone with the Tuniq Tower craze :) Spec looks good, only thing I can answer in the questions is the Enermax one. Yes they are excellent PSUs very reliable and strong!

The free alternative would be
Open Office
Works well and 100% free.

8800GTXs in SLI only need 600W. 850 really is pointless. As are Raptors.

If you want DX10 which I assume you do with the 8800 then you will need Vista at some stage. If I were buying a completely new OS and had the choice I would go with Vista even if it is 30%~ less performance atm.

Dont get the Dell 27" Same Resolution so not as good image quality. And the Price :o

I brought the G15 myself the other day. I posted a few pictures.

and Have a few more.

If you are spending a fortune on a pc you might as well spend the extra couple of pounds.

What is the difference in £2535 and £2525 except a lot more pleasure.

I would also heartily recommend the Microsoft HABU mouse. Finally I have got away from these small mice. Brilliantly ergonomic and glows to :P

Your choice though.

Logitech have a great customer support as well ;)

Good point about the 27" - would probably need it further away as well meaning I might as well have got the 24" !!!

Okay, so am going for the 24" monitor
2 x 150Gd raptors - expensive - but quick ! Or should I just get 1 not in RAID and another large but cheaper.......too hard to know!

Just the keyboard left......and the HDD........

Help!

Raptors are a total waste of money.

Couple of seagate drives with 16MB cache will do practically the same job tbh.

Would you recommend a couple of these bad boys in RAID 0 then? Will I notice much difference?

Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 500GB ST3500630AS SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM

Thanks

Nic
