Finally, an automaker puts decent infotainment first

Indeed, needs to be simple controls for the stuff you actually use when driving, and then all the rest can be in menu's that deactivate when your moving.

Ford have that for their Nav. You can’t type an address when in gear. Useless damn thing because it completely ignores the fact a passenger could be doing the typing.

That would be very useful, or even just tie the navigation system in with the seat sensors. If there’s someone sitting in the passenger seat then the nav is open to modification.

That’s another thing that hasn’t been brought up yet. Google maps is much more powerful, especially if You have an odd address or don’t know an address, but it only works if there’s signal. Fine in the UK (generally), but in many parts of the rest of the world signal can be pretty rare outside of cities and towns. Any infotainment system needs to work on the premise that there is no external signal. I’d be interested to know how the nav system in this android infotainment system works in that instance and how Google/the manufacturer work with the transition between signal and no signal.

I think it’s partly manufacturers getting ready for the next stage. Level 3 and 4 automation where most people won’t need to actually concentrate on the road much. There isn’t as much requirement for manual knobs and features when you can do it on a touchscreen, making the dash/console nearer and cheaper to make (and potentially maintain).

Perhaps then an infotainment system as deep and diverse as a phones may be a good option, but currently there really isn’t much need. Besides, the actual UI is likely to still be designed by the manufacturer, and most of the current complaints seem to stem from the UI and touch screen (which will largely be hardware).

Getting ready for when hackers can take control of your car remotely, lock you in, set the temperature to 30+, the radio to radio 1, and send you anywhere in the country for lols :D

“Something something, I’m scared they may stop me from moving cones to drive through roads closed for road works”?

On a more serious note connected devices are everywhere and outside of a one in a million case that’s just never going to happen, and be offset by the reduction in dangerous drivers killing people because they don’t think the law applies to them... (and distracted drivers for that matter).

Android P also utilises a new dynamic sound processing engine, think Viiper4Android for those who used to root their phones in the past, sound quality should be excellent for all cars running a system like this

seems the Android P equalizer is just 5 channels versus viper option of 10, so that will limit ability to autotune for a car acoustics ?
also, will it be limited bandwidth/quality bluetooth streaming off of phones, as opposed to wifi ?

would be nice to see auto makers, say more about the digital to analog/dac circuitry in their integrated systems, but similar to mobile phones, the audio quality now seems to take second place vesus other functionality - processing power for apps/screen ....

When Google spoke about the Dynamics Processing Effect we learned that it is being broken down into four different stages for each audio channel: PreEq, Multi-Band Compressor, PostEq, and Limiter. This new audio framework will support stereo as well as 5.1 surround sound too. At the input, we have a highly flexible PreEQ which will allow developers to configure both the number and width of the bands. The second stage is a multi-band compressor/expander so the volume can either be smoothly reduced (compressor) or it can amplify the quiet sounds (expander).

Some people want mobile phones on wheels :/
Isn't that a tesla:
Always running out of charge
Always too slow to charge
Over air updates
Get in trouble if using any features while driving
Big touch screen
No physical buttons
No feels
Show off to ur friends dumb pointless features
Overpriced

I don’t mind the gadgets but as far as the audio is concerned I wish they just sounded better. Best sound I heard/had was in my old T reg Accord with Bose audio, sounded fab. My 3 series has Harmon Kardon audio and it sounds pretty middling.

Bose are always too bassy and lack mid range :/

The JBL system (an optional extra from Toyota) is pretty good. Much better and clearer sound than the Bose I had in an Audi.

Same out of the car. At home I have some Yamaha speakers which are quite old now, but they put the much newer Bose ones to absolute shame.

Hmm interesting, perhaps it seems Google are doing things in the right direction, but maybe not quite there yet compared to Viper (example). I use Viper on my Android head unit and it transforms the stock speakers genuinely like night and day. It is as if I swapped out the stock amps and speakers with something aftermarket just by toggling a few sliders and options in the app.

The 825w 17 speaker Surround Sound Meridian system in our Discovery Sport sounds excellent.

As ever cars are built to a cost unless you are willing to either pay more for one in the first place or raid the options list.

touché - Are there any reputable home hifi companies also making for cars ?
Do HK make any home equipment, R&D competency to make good home equipment should give some indication of likely car system quality.
;) yes I saw Meridian are making for the Evoque, but other than that ?

edit - is the interior shape of fullsize suv's very beneficial for acoustics... like a living room !

You are fighting a battle when trying to get good audio in a car, cabin shape, occupant position, space limitations, cost and ambient noise are all against you.

The Dynaudio in my CC had very clear highs and mids bass extension was OK, the Bose system in my TT sounds like ass, but that should be no suprise to anyone, Oh the Bower and Wilkins system in the XJ also sounds nice.

I dont care who made it but the B&W in the XF I had sounded pretty good, the B&W in my XJ sounded fantastic. The HK I had in my 6 series sounded meh and the Burmiester system in my E class sounds pretty good but not as good as the XJ.

I had wondered if Alpine quality might be declining due to reduced size of aftermarket (had two aftermarket ones) but this p'head thread suggest otherwise

It's true in the two you mention but in Jaguars for instance everything behind the speakers is Alpine and Mark Levinson in Lexus use Pioneer bits. That's what I mean there are to many variations to say one is good and one is not. All you can say with any certainty is that the upgrade will be better quality than the standard system.

Just buy whatever car you want then send it to a good audio specialist to have upgraded speakers and amps put in.
The very best aftermarket systems will come in at a fraction of the price of new factory options.
EG a pair of high end component speakers is around £300.
A decent sub is around £200.
Amp to drive 4ch of speakers (4x 2 pair) approx £400
Single ch amp to drive sub £80
All can be hooked up to OEM head unit without issue.
If you want extra crispness then a DSP can be added but costs grow exponentially from here.
...
A lot of modern headunits won't work with an aftermarket amplifier, especially if a fibre optic network like MOST is used to connect them together. :(

..but - what kind of warranty do you blow if you do fit aftermarket in a newer car.
