My perfect system, built 15 mnths ago after a very handy spec from someone on this forum, has come up against a bit of a problem. Just started a new game of football manager 07 (champ man to the die hards) and there was an unpleasant noise, the screen went black. I hit the power button again, and it glowed at an ominous half light and there was no action so i flicked the switch on the PSU and then realised i was smelling cooked electricals. I opened him up, whipped out the psu, and i'm pretty sure its fried - plugged it in on its own and flicked the switch and the fan spun very slowly with much whirring noises. So...firstly, its a hiper 580W type-r, and does this happen often? Secondly, what PSU should i buy to replace it? Preferably one with a similar set up and number of outlets that won't kill me to put back in. Thirdly, is it likely to have suffered any other damage to processor, graphics, sound of hdd? Cheers guys.

omg im getting concerned about mine now.

you might want to check this thread out and check there now

and see what they have put and have to say

Yeh Hipers are prone to dying.
I would personally recommend a Corsair HX520W or a HX620W.
Best way to see if its damaged any other parts would be to test them individually.

Do you have another PSU for testing? If not then as said try your components individually on another computer if possible.

If you look at the Hiper explosive club thread only 1 person had his components taken out by the power supply, so I would order a new one and figers crossed that your other components are fine.

As suggested Corsair has brilliant PSUs, and so does Seasonic, Tagan, Antec 7 Enermax.

Right, cheers guys. Probably stupid question but, with say the corsair 520w will it matter that its 60w less powerful than my present one? And also, will it have the same number of outlets and the same pin formations - the hiper has 4x4 pin, 1x3 pin and 1x2 pin? Finally, will i be able to use the hiper cabling for the corsair psu? Cheers again

I read the title and I sensed it was another Hiper thread.

Make sure you RMA it if possible, even if you do not intend to use the replacement, you can always sell the replacement.

No you cannot use the Hiper modular cables on Corsair but you will get more than enough cables with the corsair anyway so there is no worry.

And yes the corsair 520W will be able to handle your PC just fine despite being rated 60W less. Your should have a 24-pin ATX socket and an additional 4-pins +12V socket on your mobo which the corsair will support.

Haha i think watchdog mite not consider a PSU "mainstream" enough. Annoyingly, the replacement'll take 7 working days to arrive AND i have to pay the postage!

You will probably find the Corsair to be better as the Hiper cannot even reach it's claimed 580w anyway. Several magazine reviews found this out. One even had their test kit fail because of a failed Hiper.

i bought oner of these months ago, installed it, turned on the wall socket and BANG, lots of smoke and me sat on the floor with my head in my hands :(

all was well tho, didnt take any componants with it :)

FSP, Enermax or Antec...... have been great for me (and the builds i've done for other people), but i'd also say Seasonic or Corsair are good brands to go with to.
