Finally trying to lose weight!

Hi all,

Weighed myself at the beginning of the year and I'm at the absolute heaviest I have ever been. Currently 15st 9lb and looking to shed as much as possible before a holiday at the end of May. I am 5 foot 10 btw.

My diet is atrocious and I never get any excercise. For ages I have been having two bowls of Crunchy Nut a day and a main meal in the evening, usually something rubbish and processed.

This is what I am trying...

10 miles per day cross trainer on hardest setting
100 push ups
100 sit ups

Weetabix and a banana instead of Crunchy Nut and then a main meal of some meat and rice or pasta etc.

I was wondering what else I should be doing?

I have 1 or two coffee's per day and several pints of water at the moment.

When I do the excersises I am having about 2.5 litres more water per day. I don't drink anything else.

Do you think this plan (which I'm currently doing) is a good idea?

If so, how quickly do you think I may see some benefit from this?

Thanks very much,

G

i've done similar over the past year and lost a couple of stones.

main thing i found that i was stupidly eating whenever i wanted (added into it that it was mostly unhealthy), once i cut this back to having a couple of meals a day with healthy snacks if i got peckish, and not eating so much of the unhealthy stuff it seemed to work for me.

what hadn't really occurred to me, and yes it sounds sodding stupid now that i've done it, was that i really wasn't hungry but i was eating :(.

added into that i also started walking a bit more and doing some light exercising.

if the weetabix is breakfast and the main meal your evening meal i'd look to work on something for late morning/early afternoon to tide you over, otherwise you'll eat whatever you can lay your hands on when you get hungry.

I have weetabix for breakfast and again for lunch and then a meal like pasta in the evening.

I am not bothered about hunger and won't eat anything I don't plan to so hopefully I will lose some :)

I haven't ever really been someone who eats anything when it's not breakfast, lunch or dinner. Never have snacks unless there is some occasion too, like eating some Doritos and drinking a few jars whist watching the footy with my dad etc.

Just checked and I am 15st 5 now.

you're over complicating things, find out how much calories you burn in 24 hours, and cut off 10-20% off of that and stick to it for a while until you're losing weight steadily, you could eat basically whatever you want, just stick to your calories.

As for rice or pasta, you might as well get good carbohydrates while you're at it, which means you gotta eat veggies like broccoli etc :D. And if you can, just stop eating rice and pasta all together.

Hi, and well done for starting out! :)

Firdtly, check out the opening post in the GymRats 2015 thread as there is a lot of grest information in there relating to diet and exercise.

Secondly, your diet needs a lot of work (sounds like you are chowing down on carbs, carbs and more carbs): carbs are not necessarily a problem, but protein and fat are 'better' sources of repair componentry and energy. Which means you will feel less bad over time as you begin to lose weight.

Thirdly, yohr exerciee regime is... not great. It is better than nothing, sure, but you need a well-structured routine than will help you lose weight consistently and effectively... which pushups, situps (which are not great as either an ab exercise or weightloss method) and the crosstrainer at full tilt for 10km will not.

Haply to help on either count, but main thing is to keep posting and keep your motivation up! :)

I struggle with weights because I have arthritis :( my wrists are very painful and would be made worse by lifting :/

I just want to do what I can to lose weight, not looking to get ripped :)

Is cross trainer not good for cardio? Would a treadmill be better? Have one arriving tomorrow :) (the mrs doesn't get on with the cross trainer)

Listen, you dont actually have to do any exercise, just cut your calories enough so you're in a calorie deficit. Over time you will lose fat, consistency is key.

And yes, cross trainer is probably decent for some cardio :)

So you can't lift weights because your wrists will hurt, but you are planning on doimg 100 pushups a day? Right... something doesn't really add up there, but whatever. ;)

A crosstrainer - or any form of exercise - s better than nonthing, but jist blasting for 10km on maximum resistance will make things slow, push up your prolactin and cortisol levels quickly and make you feel rubbish in the long term.

And who ever said lifting weights would get your ripped? :)

Seems like you have made up your mind and that is cool... but if you want to make things more effective then we are here to help. :)

yea... Doing pushups isnt exactly good for your wrists, i think doing benchpresses with a light weight would be better just because you can keep your wrists straight and you can lift lighter.

I can do the push ups cause I have a chin up bar thing that you put on the floor so you can grip it and not have to bend your wrists. Without that I can't do them at all because my wrists don't physically bend enough to get my hands flat on the floor :( Bench press would be good for that too if I had the equipment I reckon :)

I considered a diet of smoothies/juices but didn't think I had a juicer.... just found one in the back of one of the kitchen cupboards so I could use that too :)

OP... If you feel fit enough to do 100 pushups a day im convinced you can do some decent weight lifting. If you start doing that, count your calories and keep them 10-20% under your "required" amount and you'll be set i think.

Edit: Do you have access to a gym nearby? Why not go there?

It is tricky finding chance to get to the gym cause we have three small children and my Mrs works night so I have been trying to think if things I can achieve at home for now :)

May have to see if one of my brothers might be able to lend me some weights to try.
