I'll give you my opinion as to why it is annoying.

It's annoying because as a forum user for as long as they existed (dial up bbs anyone?) I can tell you that a forum is supposed to have a more conversational approach to it. i.e a chat board. Signing off your name kinda spoils this and goes against the whole point of informal chat.

An email is signed off normally as email replaces letters as a formal method of communication.

Therefore that is how I find it annoying. It would appear that some people don't care or arnt bothered - I just feel it's poor communication - it doesn't need to be there, no one is going to think 'who wrote those two sentences??'.

Don't be such a pretentious oik.

I've been signing posts, emails, Usenet posts and everything else with '*n' for over a decade. I'll keep doing it.

Bite me.

You could say this about quite a few things. I mean, why have a sig telling every man and his dog what kind of PC you have, does everyone else really care? Why tell us how many folding/seti units you have crunched? Why have a sig with a certain birds body parts in it? It's all presonal preference and it's what makes the world interesting in that everbody has their own view point on certain things.

For me, i only usually sign a post with my name if i am asking a question or thanking someone for an answer.

No pretentions here, boyo ;)

In person I am exactly as I come across on here; ask those who have met me.

Hey, I said I was giving my opinion.

Nice ninja edit ;)

Of course you're giving an opinion. As "a forum user for as long as they existed", you of all people should know that any post is opinion...Obviously excluding posts such as:

Or should that be...

how you act outside of here has nothing to do with it.

pretentious : Characterized by an exaggerated show of dignity or self-importance.
So all you're saying above is that you're just as pretentious outside the forums as you are here. :p

I only put my real name at the bottom of my posts if I feel the need to connect on a more personal level. Putting your forum name is a bit pointless IMO.

Hello and good evening everyone on this wonderful day 17th December 2006, i hope you're all enjoying yourselves.

meh. Hate people who sign off every post with their real names. Its even more annoying when people make up a wierd and wonderful forum name and then stick their real name at the bottom of every post.
Do they all manually type these signoffs in every post or is there a forum feature that does it for you?

Thankyou for reading this original and thoughtful post brought to you by Joe42. Goodbye and Godbless, please enjoy your day.

I started doing it because someone complemented someone else on a forum I used for doing some form of witty signing off. I wanted to become a respected member of the community so I thought it was a good idea, and I began. After I began it became a habit, now I hate to post without signing off, it is almost as bad as leaving a bracket open. Leaving brackets open is a really bad thing in my opinion, I hate it a lot; also leaving tags open in HTML, etc. it makes me feel the document goes on forever.
