Firefox 3.0 Download Day (Guinness World Record)

Downloaded it, loaded it up, used for about 30 minutes, returned to opera 9.5

I'm afraid I still don't see what all the fuss is about with firefox...

Personally it's the amount of extensions/add-ons/widgets that it supports.

Over time it's allowed me to create a fully customized personalised browser that has an almost perfect feel where-ever I go.

Foxmarks means I carry my bookmarks to any of the machines I use, whether it be my HTPC, a laptop, a work desktop or my own home PC.

FireFTP means I've got an FTP included wherever I go.

Customize-Google means I can change Google's appearance and usability to suit my needs. Change the way GMail works, change the way Google Images works, hide GoogleAds.

I can strip ads out of websites I visit often and get the content I want and the content I need.

Spellcheck as I type, a great feature I use constantly in FF.

GMail Notifier for instant notification if I've received any GMails.

NoScript, Update Notifier, Sage, URL Fixer, Javascript Debugger, SeoQuake...etc...etc...

On principle FF is really no better than any other browser these days. IE8 is looking increasingly good (I use the Beta at work), and Opera is still a very good browser.

But personally, Firefox edges it for me because of the amount of add-ons and customisation that I have implemented into the core of the program over the years.

I can't say I'm impressed with FF3.

Mostly I despise the new address bar functionality. If I type 'for' in there, I should get results like forums.overclockers...etc but instead I get any site which contains those three letters. Useless to me.

I tried the 'oldbar' extension which is touted as the solution to this, and it doesn't work much better either. The extension authors admit it uses the FF3 algorithm and not the FF2 one.

Also on FF2, https secure pages would turn the address bar yellow, so it was clear you were on a secure page. Now it is still white just like any non secure page. Whose bright idea was that?

Finally the toolbar buttons are dismally bad - like something out of Windows 95 days. Would it really have taken much effort to design something attractive and modern.

I still use the Night Launch theme so it looks just like before accept for the address bar function like you said.

I'm back on FF2 for now, until and unless someone fixes the address bar. It is a show stopper issue for me because I use it all the time, to visit a previously visited URL I know the first few letters of.

Another little thing - very minor but nonetheless irritating - the first, left most item in the bookmarks toolbar in FF3 is right up to the very left edge of the screen. In FF2, there is a gap of maybe five pixels which is much neater.

Instead of turning the URL bar yellow, it turns the favicon space at the left blue. For a site with an EV certificate, it pops the name of the company who own the certificate and there's a whole green space. Then there's Larry.
The "bright idea" is that a padlock can be trivially spoofed and yellow address bar doesn't mean anything...

I know what it does now but I don't see why they couldn't have left it yellow as well. It does mean something to me, it reminds me that I'm on a secure page - in a very clear visual way which I can't miss.

 There's probably an option somewhere for that.

It does mean something to me, it reminds me that I'm on a secure page

No it doesn't - it means you're on a site that uses SSL. That isn't the same as "a secure page".

Anyone know if it's possible to have a Favourites button like on IE? So I can then hide the menu bar using that mod.

I did see a Bookmarks button in the customise menu but that just activates the sidebar, not a drop down like on IE.

for some reason firefox isnt skinning my bookmark toolbar or my address bar. if i use a dark theme the backgrounds stay grey. anybody have any ideas?

I meant are you using a Windows theme or a Firefox one...

If it's the latter then either the theme's got something wrong with it or there's CSS somewhere else (e.g. userChrome.css or through Stylish) changing the background colour.

You can colour it yellow all the time, it would be about as meaningful...
