v3.5 RC1 of the award-winning Firefox Web browser has been released.

edit - update

According to a report by webmonkey, the final version of Firefox 3.5 will be released on June 30.

Firefox 3.5 is the first major revision since 3.0 was released about a year ago. The new version sports a faster rendering engine, stability enhancements and a new javascript engine. It will also include support for the most widely-used elements of HTML 5 that allows for offline data access, enhanced web graphics and multimedia playback without plug-ins. The Firefox logo has also had a small revision as well.

Mozilla has been showing different 3.5 features within a 35 day period, and has also shown the new tools developers can take advantage of in the new version.

The new version was originally going to be 3.1, but was renamed to 3.5 later to reflect a greater scope of changes than what has originally been planned.

one thing I wish they'd change in firefox (maybe you can..)

not checking for updates to addons when it loads, ie check 2 mins later, and automatically install all updates to addons/firefox without user intervention and without letting me know

Teaf, I don't want to disable auto update, just make it completely silent and not check before it starts firefox... currently it slows down firefox when opening it

It's not RC1, but rather a RC candidate. Yay for confusion.

yeah that's all i have really noticed apart from you can drag tabs across browers, not sure why you would need too but hey

The point of it is you can detach tabs into a new window, and drag tabs between the windows.

...so in the wider scope of things when do we expect 3.5 to be rolled out all singing and dancing? There's so much chatter and speculation out there...

It'll be out "when it's ready" - probably not that long away.

There's a gotcha in this and, to some extent b99 (the "Preview"). If you go back to beta 4 with the same profile it'll chew up your sqlite databases (i.e. your history, bookmarks, passwords etc).

So they're wrong? It would hardly be the first time a site like that's got it wrong and pushed a nightly as a new beta.

so yay for your confusion

Er, what? It wasn't directed at you...

er but it even says it in the link you posted :p

Our 800,000+ Firefox 3.5 beta users will be receiving an update to the first Firefox 3.5 release candidate (3.5rc1build2) in order to continue to help us with daily testing and public feedback. This update contains bug fixes which will be included in the final release of Firefox 3.5, expected later this month. While Mozilla has not yet completed the quality assurance testing required before an official product release, this update is considered stable for daily browsing use and we appreciate your assistance in helping us test and evaluate this version of the release candidate.

It says it's an update to build 1/beta 99, not that it's the RC. The bit after you quoted:

If you’re not yet a Firefox 3.5 Beta tester, we recommend that you wait for the upcoming Firefox 3.5 Release Candidate, which should be released on our website within the next week.

And from one of the devs, here:

Hi Folks,

Hopefully I can clear a few things up here:
* 3.5b4 is 3.5 Beta 4, not RC1
* 3.5b99 is branded and messaged as "3.5 Preview"
* The thing we released yesterday is the release candidate candidate, known to us as 3.5rc1build2. Despite it saying 'rc1' it is not what we are releasing or messaging as "RC1".
* You can get the release candidate candidate by using "Check for Updates" from 3.5b4 or 3.5b99
* Downgrading from 3.5b99 to 3.5b4 with the same profile is a bad idea.

Does that clear anything up?

As I said, yay for confusion :(

well they have called it rc1 on the download, so they are leading the confusion table right now

The point of RC candidates is they look like proper RCs because if there are no bugs blocking the release that candidate can become the RC (and similarly an RC can become the 3.5 release).

It was Mozilla I was saying were being unclear here - I don't get where you're taking issue here...

fair enough, nough said on the matter. so far it all seems to be working ok, anyone know off hang when there planned release date is? September?
