Hi all.

I have reinstalled Windows today and decided to try out Firefox Thunderbird instead of Outlook Express for my emails.
I have followed many guides on the internet to set it up with gmail, but I am still having problems.
The first thing I notice is Thunderbird does not seem to be asking for a user and pass at all.
In the "Server Settings" I see it asks if I want to use secure connection, the options are "Never" (which is selected), "TLS" and "SSL" - which one does Gmail need?

When I click "Get Mail" in the left bottom corner it says "connected to pop.gmail.com..." and stays like that for a while, then nothing else happeneds...

Any help would be appreciated.

Not sure what the problem is, but have you thought of getting Thunderbird 2.0 RC1 - i think it was released today or yesterday and is supposed to include easy integration with GMAIL - I'll find a link and post back in a mo.

Edit: Here you go Thunderbird 2.0 RC1

The release notes are as follows:

What's New in Thunderbird 2 RC 1

* Message Tags: Create your own tags for organizing email. Messages can be assigned any number of tags. Tags can be combined with saved searches and mail views to make it easier to organize email.
* Visual Theme: Thunderbird 2's theme and user interface have been updated to improve usability and maximize screen real estate.
* Session History Navigation: Back and Forward buttons allow navigation through message history.
* Advanced Folder Views: Customize the folder pane to show favorite, unread or recent folders.
* Easy Access to Popular Web Mail Services: Gmail and .Mac users can access their accounts in Thunderbird by simply providing their user names and passwords.
* Improved Support For Extensions: Extensions can now add custom columns to the message list pane in addition to storing custom message data in the mail database.
* Improved New Mail Notification Alerts: New mail alerts include information such as the subject, sender and message preview text.
* Folder Summary Popups: Mouse over a folder with new messages to see a summary of the new messages in that folder.
* Saved Search Folder Performance: Search results for saved search folders are now cached, improving folder loading performance.
* Find As You Type: Finds and highlights message text as you type.
* Improved Filing Tools: Recent folder menu items for moving and copying messages to recently used folders. Move / Copy again functionality.
* Updates to the Extension System: The extension system has been updated to provide enhanced security and to allow for easier localization of extensions.
* New Windows installer: Based on Nullsoft Scriptable Install System, the new Windows installer resolves many long-standing issues.
* Windows Vista Support: Many enhancements and fixes for Windows Vista.

That would be good, thanks.

This is the error I am now getting when I try to send mail.

well i use outlook but the settings for any pop3 client are the same. you should be using ssl for both pop3 and smtp. the ports are

995 pop3
465 smtp

I just installed the new Thunderbird and it done it all for me :D
Thanks for the help though, you are right, it does need SSL which wasn't on the tutorial I was reading.

Good news - let us know your thoughts on RC1, IMO it looks pretty good but keen to hear other views.

I love it so far, but I've only been using it for 5 mins and the only other Email client I have used is Outlook Express - it's certainly better than Outlook.
It has lots of good features, but I can't compare them to earlier versions because I have never used Thunderbird before. The junk mail filter seems to be doing a good job (it's already blocked an unwanted mail).
It looks really good too...

Yeah Thunderbird is pretty cool. Underrated I think, especially considering its in the Firefox shadow.

Much much better than any Outlook Express I've ever used and probably Outlook itself. Outlook was always too business orientated for me. Thunderbird seems to be suited to me yet also compatible for business use!

does thunderbird support http mail accounts yet? last time i tried it ages ago, i couldn't open my lycos mail account with it. :)

There is a Webmail extension for it. Tried it with my Hotmail but it was rather temperamental. Hence why I changed my MSN address from Hotmail to Gmail. The latter worked much better in Thunderbird. :)
