Firing someone

Just do your best Anne Robinson impersonation, or LOLcat version :-)

In the style of my old boss talk them into firing themselves - by which I mean he'd start with getting them to politely agree they'd had adequate training, had support, etc. etc. until he'd basically got them to agree that they were incompetent and should be fired by the time he'd built upto whatever they were being fired for. (Not sure I can really convey it very well).

Was quite depressing the number of times I sat there watching people put their foot in it knowing exactly what game he was playing.

I've fired quite a few people. Remember your firing them for a reason.

When I do it I'm courteous and explain everything to them on why they are being fired. After you tell the person they normally huff and puff or just sit there for a few seconds while it all sinks in. Escort them offsite, but make sure they've handed their locker keys or anything work related.

Strange as it seems quite a few of the people I have walked offsite have shook my hand at the end.

Can go both ways - I saw my old supervisor from my first job get glassed in chicago rock one night by someone he'd fired but I've also talked to people who've said getting fired made them sit up and try to do something with their lives and thankful for it in the long run.

Do the Sugar!!!

Ask them a question then go Hmmm, Mmmm, Hmmmm and shake your head a lot..

Then talk to an invisible person to their left, then point meaningfully and say the immortal words.

best bit of advise I can give you is make sure you have someone with you when it goes down, preferably someone from HR.

if not, even a senior manager, this will protect you from future repercussions and also people are less likely to react violently, when another person is present.

this is standard practice for larger companys.

Keep all conversation factual, follow your company process to the letter.

Do NOT apologise to them for doing it - Don't say anything along the lines of "I'm sorry but...". State your case including the reasons why the are being fired, followed up with "and for these reasons the resulting outcome is that your employment with xxxx will be terminated as of xx/xx/xxxx"

Try and keep your emotions out of it and you should do fine.

Don't be personal, it's a business issue which needs addressed. Just be aware it can and will occasionally not go very nicely.

I've had a guy try and find out my home address because he was going to "come have words with you" which isn't much fun..
