well, everything was wired up nicely, except the SPEAKER 4 pin, because my case does not have a case speaker ( nice one zalman), upon my first boot the fans spun the lights came on and the cpu fan seemed to be accelerating to insane speeds, i took that as a sign the cpu was working, But no output to the moniter, i tried all connections to no avail, decided to check the i7 chip itself, i cant quite remember but i think the cpu wasnt in the correct way, which is odd because they only go one way, so i changed it so the gold arrow faced bottom left as instructed, i did get a smudge of arctic silver compound inbetween the top and bottom of the chip, but not touching any connecters, upon second try lights and fans turned on but now its doing the classic old on for 2 seconds then off rinse & repeat, to my amazement it still tried to boot even with the psu unplugged once or twice

as for TIM, i spread a thin layer on the chip cover and smoothed it, it wasnt quite at the point of being almost see through, and i didnt smooth it obsessively, i also put a 1mm thick line down the middle for it to spread when the sink is applied, i had no heating issues during the first try as far as i could work out, but then again i wasnt even sure if the cpu had power,

i removed the cmos and replaced, checked connections, did a skeleton boot, and it would be FANTASTIC to have a fairly detailed awnser, i have found that some peoples awnsers tend to leave a lot to be desired

this is my last resort before i take it to a pro ( which could cost me a bit)

cheeeers!

also, the psu is a brand new corsair

also, compound remover leaked down and was inebetween the crack, dont know if it touched any vital organs

Ouch. If you turned it on within 2hrs of the spillage then this may also have helped with the short.

Definitely return the mobo and CPU under DSR ASAP before it is too late.

some of the parts are over a year old, so your saying i can send the parts to the various sellers, broken, and i r get new ones?!

the cpu is one year old

i shall probably get the sysem checked by a pro i dont wana send for a new cpu when it could possibly be in tip top shape

No! DSR gives you additional rights to return items ordered from a distance (Internet, mail order, etc.) if you change your mind (in a given period following receipt). The goods are supposed to be returned in an unmolested state.

Unfortunately many people seem to think that the DSR are some sort of magical free extended warranty. Buy it, break it, return it under DSR.

Getting things checked by someone with the necessary facilities shouldn’t cost too much (assuming you do the delivery/collection). The most you should be looking at is an hours labour.

My bad. It was your first build so i thiught that all the parts were new.
Im guessing that you need to RMA your CPU. If you can, get it checked by a pro to see if it is faulty. Get your mobo checked aswell and RMA Accordingly.

I don't know how but if you managed to put the CPU in the wrong way you'll have done some serious damage to the socket and/or CPU.

Far too much TIM. You either wanted a thin layer on the chip or a blob the size of a grain of rice in the middle which would be spread when the heatsink is applied. Sometimes belt and braces is too much and who knows where all that Arctic Silver has gone. If any got into the socket that will have knackered it.

Take it all apart, have a look at the bottom of the cpu and in the socket. If you got any Arctic Silver in either of those two places you've probably fried something.

As some of the parts are not new are you sure they were working in the first place?

Whereabouts are you located? Some kind soul may take pity and come and help you.

If you tried to boot with the CPU the wrong way round, you've got a knackered CPU and very possibly a knackered motherboard. :(

RMA the cpu and motherboard may be pointless, if you have damaged the pins in the socket because you fitted it the wrong way around, then your claim will just be laughed at and rejected.

Hi, a little tip before you do anything ie: build a PC, read up on it theres plenty of info on the net and print it off, so you have it handy if you get stuck. Did you not read the instructions that came with the CPU, on how to install it?

Always read up on the compent that you are about to install if its your 1st build, etc, saves you a lot of hassle. I still do, my latest upgrade was a custom waterloop, l read up on it, as l say plenty of info on the net , google is your freind. ;)
