Hey, just making this thread to post any questions I have while building my PC to save making loads of threads!

Spec:
Intel i7 2600k
Gigabyte GA-Z68X-UD3H-B3
Corsair Vengeance 16gb @ 1.5V
Radeon HD5770
Corsair HX520
OCZ Agility 3 60gb
2x500gb sata hard drive + 1x80gb sata hard drive

Hey guys.

Finally built it and it all seems to be working! Again, I have a couple of questons! :D

1, It booted from my old hard drive into windows 7, is this harmful? Also, while in w7 couldnt resist not right clicking on my computer. However it said for the CPU, "i7-2600k @ 3.40GHZ 3.7GHZ." Where has 3.7 come from??

2, It wont recognise my SSD in my computer. However was looking in bios and found it had recognised it in "IDE CHannel 4 Slave". Any ideas? I want to boot from this and install a fresh OS!

Thanks!

doesnt really matter what sata slots you put the HDD's in

as for the eSATA thing, im not sure if there is a dedicated eSATA slot, or if you put it in the normal sata slot

Read the manual, there maybe a SATA connection that boots quicker for a SSD, at least thats what the manual for my board said.

Also dont forget to set the SATA controller its attached to AHCI instead of IDE mode.

You'll want the SSD in either SATA3_0 or SATA3_1 as they'll be the connectors for the Intel controller, and thus give you the best performance, as for the other HDDs, it doesn't matter. For eSATA, again, any will do, but you need to enable hotswaping in the BIOS for that port (if it isn't already)

All the hard drives are plugged in now! Im now tackling the annoying amount of wires I got with the case! Firstly I have a HD audio lead, I presume this is plugged into the port which says audio like in this picture?
Also, on that same lead however I have this. I don't see anywhere on the motherboard for this unless I'm being blind! Is it needed?

I also have these leads. What are these for? Also lastly, I have plugged in 2 fans to the motherbaord but my case has 3 fans but I only see 2 holder on the motherboard for fans, heres a hi res pic of my mobo, am I just being blind or do I need to buy something?: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/11365869/pc/fullresmobo.jpg

Sorry for all the questions! :D

Plug the HD audio into that port, leave the AC';97 dangling.

the other cables come from your front panel of the case,

power switch can go either polarity.
reset switch can go either polarity.

HDD LED just flashes when there is activity, if the LED dont work just swap the polarity over, same for the power LED.

I also have these leads. What are these for? They are for the reset switch on the front of your case, and the LED that tells you if your PC is on or not (also at the front of the case), they plug into pins on your mobo (usually near the bottom right hand corner) Look in the mobo manual for which pins (they are called the front panel headers)

Sorry for all the questions! :D

Sorted! Nice one guys :) Thanks a lot, no doubt I'll post again soon. :p

edit: oh 1 thing, I was going to buy some more fans for my case, is this impossible now or is there something you an buy to get more fan ports?

Also, is it my PSU lead supposed to look like this? It appears to have metal in each pin except one? Is that normal? Worked OK in my last pc..?

You can fit more fans to that easily.

Cooling system
2x 140mm fans (one 140mm included, one optional) with removable and washable filters, in the front. Recommended for intake of air.
1x 120mm fan optional with removable and washable filter, in the front. Recommended for intake of air.
1x 180mm fan included in the top of the case. Recommended for exhaust of air.
1x 140mm fan included in the rear of the case. Recommended for exhaust of air.
1x 120/140mm fan optional in the side of the case. Recommended for intake of air.

so a possible extra 2-3 fans can be added.

Oh, I know the case can fit more fans I'm just unsure if my mobo has enough ports to fit them?? Sorry for not explaining myself properly!

I know what you mean. Rather than using the motherboard to power the fans, you can just connect them to your PSU via a molex connector. No need to hook it up to the motherboard at all.

With regards to the missing pin in the 24 pin ATX. That's the -5v line, which is no longer needed.

Cool thanks! Think everything is pretyt much wired up now, just figuiring out which goes where in the PSU now! :)

EDIT: I've got a 4 pin cable coming from my PSU, but it doesnt seem as if it goes anywhere! I have already plugged in a 24 pin and a 8 pin into the mobo! Is this another cable I can just keep loose?

That's the easy part :p There really only is a few unique cables.

Sata - flat thin black connectors (used for hard drives and optical drives)

Molex - white 4 pin chunky connector (used for the above +fans, pumps, cathodes... and anything else really)

24 pin (into mobo)

4+4 [8 pin] (into mobo to power CPU)

6+2 [8 pin] (for graphics cards) *will be labelled PCI-E*

That's pretty much all that comes off of a PSU that is essential and that's what they're all for.

The hard part is keeping the cables out the way of everything else and keeping it tidy for optimum airflow/coolness.
