well I'm coming up to the time where I'm looking at my first car,
ideally I would like a black golf, 1.6 petrol in black but I dunno if its going to be possible
what I want from the car I get is:
going to see me thru uni
looks nice
cheapish
good mpg
sounds nice

any advice and suggestions?

thanks

I just think they are good cars, reliable, good looking, nd my mates 1.6 petrol is quite nippy too.
my sister had a 2.0l turbo diesel 306 for her first car, the insurance is mad

Rubbish. There may be better alternatives if you don't like the Golf but a blanket "Golf for 3k isn't worth having" is complete nonsense.

ok maybe that was a little strong, but if there are better alternatives then it isnt the best option.

obv looks are subjective, and the problem with the top spec Golfs is a benefit but the lower spec - they all look the same.

Golfs are traditionally overpriced, I have no idea on the reliability of that particular 1.6 but as for performance, i think its about 100bhp? Not a lot for a fairly hefty car.

Insurance wise, I would think a golf will be more to insure than an equavilent focus.

For what it is worth, my friend has a 1.9GT TDI which he got for slightly under £3k and it is a very able first car. It's far better than spending money on a Clio or a Micra or any of those other absolutely pap cars.

But the GTTDI engine is a good one. The 1.6 will only leave him wanting something more powerful.
