Picked up a car yesterday, guess it's a bit late to ask for advice now but mainly just looking for general tips and stuff. It's a 55 reg Renault Megane Oasis, 1.5 dCi with 94k miles. Got it for £999 from a used car dealership, think someone used it as a part exchange car. Still has 11 months MOT though. Mainly need it for getting between home and uni every few months, doubt I'll use it for commuting much. But I was looking for something actually powerful enough to comfortably do motorway speeds, but still reasonably cheap to insure (group 7/50 I believe, and £30 tax).
Couple of questions, anyone have any tips regarding what to look out for? I've heard they can have electrical issues, seems fine so far. Only thing I've noticed is that the driver side window control is a bit stuttery when winding up the passenger side window. Obviously not a huge issue, but I'm wondering if there's a chance it might be indicative of a problem that might get worse or just a faulty switch.
The MOT certificate has a couple of advisories - a slightly corroded rear brake pipe and some play on the inner steering rack joint. Google tells me that both of these would require some pretty cheap parts and about an hour of labour each, would you consider getting on top of them or just waiting until the next MOT?
The trim is absolutely fine, only thing that's looking a bit worn is the steering wheel itself. How do you feel about steering wheel covers to prevent any more wear? Are they alright or just a complete no go?
In a similar vein, what about a wide angle lens for the rear window? I had one in the car I used to learn, seemed reasonably useful and I know people can have trouble with reversing these because of the large behind.
Thanks for bearing with me
