First car, how did I do?

Plenty of bargains about.
I paid £600 for my mondeo five years ago as a quick stop gap banger.
Never changed the oil or filter, never used a drop either.
All it's cost me is a new coil pack (£14) and a new lower suspension arm (£33)
The bloody thing refuses to die!
At this rate i'll have to sell it on when I decide on a new toy.

If it's not to late to take it back I would. You can pick them up for around £600

Watch for the doors filling with water and damaging the electrics

I know everyone thinks OcUK Motors is nasty and hates anything that isn't a Porsche or something but it's not the case, most of the dislike for things has solid basis. The Megane is a particularly interesting case in point.

These are not THAT old yet and they don't rust. So you'd expect to see lots of them around, right? They did sell loads. Yet when did you last see one? This prompted me to go looking. There are many variants of Megane so it's difficult to pick the right variant but I went for the DCI 120. Introduced in 2003 with the rest of the Megane II range, the figures make interesting reading:

As you can see, the numbers on the road are sharply declining. Why? They are not rusting away. Some will be accident damaged of course as with any cars but I believe this is a particularly abnormal rate of decline for what is a fairly modern car.

By 2008 there were 12,000 in this trim level alone yet now less than HALF of them are still on the road. Most of these cars are under 10 years old?!

My guess? People are scrapping them after finding seriously expensive faults developing.

Take a look at this similar car introduced around the same time and notice how most of them are still on the road:

Focus C-Max:

You can see from New Registrations that most of these are 2003-2005ish cars, similar age to the Megane. Yet most of them live, yet the majority of Meganes are no longer on the road.

IMHO these cars are a liability. Asking how did you after the event seems pointless - its yours now - but next time do some homework before buying a car and hopefully you'll get lucky with this one.

These are bad cars, bad buys and no amount of people saying how horrid OcUK Motors is can change that I'm afraid.

At no point have I called this sub nasty or snobbish :p I knew what I was in for when I posted the thread ;)

I believe the model you've picked out has the 1.9 diesel, which is a lot more problematic than the engine I have. Anyway I'm pretty happy with the car, seems to be in better condition than most others I looked at in a similar price range, and it's a lot cheaper to run than a standard Focus/Fiesta.

There's been a lot of good advice posted in this thread, I'll certainly take that on board. More than I expected even, so thanks to everyone!

Lots of reasons for that, other than terminal mechanical failures.
The cmax tends to be worth more on the forecourt than the megane, and people tend to take better care (ie servicing) when they're spending more money. The Ford was also about 20 more expensive from new.
New Ford spares are cheaper and used ones more plentiful which also plays a part in this. The same fault in both cars could have a different outcome. An expensive repair on a car with low trade value might well result in the car being scrapped whereas a car with a better level of buyer confidence may be worth saving.
Then there's the owner demographic. Cmax is aimed at, and is more suitable for, a family. That also tends to affect how a car is treated.

This is a 1.5 model and while there is a noticeable drop it's nowhere near as severe. Not surprising as the 1.5 is a decent lump but the 1.9 is just a lump.

The registrations tab shows you when the cars included were registered. As you can see most are 97 which explains the sharp decline.
