First car, how did I do?

It sounds a better deal than my second banger - an eight year old Austin Allegro for £800 which went for scrap after nine months.

As others have intimated, at the sub-£1000 price level it's a complete lottery and essentially look upon every mile you get from the car is a bonus. If it passes the next MOT - even better. But the chances are you've got someone's rather worn family hack... :)

I'm still running my £400 quid Xedos 9... bargains can be had and this notion of crap cars for under £1k.... years ago yeah, now? Not so sure... I can find some little gems.... if I could be bothered.

Good luck with the car fella, but be aware, everyone will take the p*ss

It's not about it being a £1k car, the Megane was awful when it was a £15k car too :D

Do you speak from experience of owning a lot of French car's? And following on from there a lot of diesel Megane's?

I only ask as I have owned quite a few cars, a number of them French (Citroen and Renault) and have had the least amount of issues with them compared to say Ford/Vauxhall cars.

OP, you wont know if you have done well until you have lived with it for a while, at this price point most car's are a lottery.

Ive had my share of cars, and you can easily get a lemon from any of them. I was hit by a uninsured driver a few years ago, and picked up a cheapo £1k Renault Laguna Estate to tide me over, I only wanted it to last a few months. That damn thing just wouldnt give in, it was the most reliable car ive had.

Oddly to go against the grain of stereotypes the most unreliable rubbish ive had was an A3

I would put that bike in the boot for when your car makes a regular occurrence of packing in on your way to work at least u will be able to carry on your commute :p:D
Nah jokes aside its a good enough run around for a first car op ;)

Doesn't look that bad, just don't spend anything over £100 on a single item to fix it when it breaks and you'll be fine. Any more than that and just replace the car. :D

This is like a red rag to a bull, buying a cheap diesel Megane and asking how you did

Renault-Check

1.5 DCi Diesel-Check

11 years old-Check

Yup! :D

Seriously, Change the oil and get the cam belt changed if it hasn't been done "recently"

Then change the oil again.

Then change the oil every 6000 miles.

And then you will be fine, really! :D

The 1.5 is a decent engine unless it's had a hard life. The 1.9, on the other hand, isn't good enough to make a decent bookend never mind a powerplant for a car.
The key card system is prone to failure both partial and total and if the steering wheel judders at idle it's a good indication that the dual mass flywheel is considering early retirement. It's an expensive job circa 600 quid in parts alone.
The fact is the French stuff always has corners cut from the brief. Rubber bushes and bearings are good example of poor quality components used on these. IIRC the injection computer case can let water in due to a combination of bad design and poor choice of location.

Any car at that age / price can be a potential nightmare, you just won't know its a dud until you've owned it a few months. Just keep an eye on the basics and get anything weird checked out and you would have done all you can really! All cars are a lottery!
