First car - max budget £2000

Sorry for the bump but would you guys turn down a high mileage mondeo just out of principle?

http://www.brooklandmotors.co.uk/3762/stock.htm (page 2, top car)

06 mondeo 1.8 estate for £3300, it's got almost 110,000 miles on it. Presuming it's got a FSH history it will still be in good nick right?

.

No, but you can find a lower mileage example than that for that money and that age without trying too hard.

Why get a 1.6 focus as a first car? Surely a small engined runabout is all you need for a first car?

Why not? A 1.6 Focus will be much nicer to drive about in than 1.0 Corsa or something, so if it's not really much more expensive to insure why wouldn't you?

Good stuff, a good buy, and good news on the insurance.

Still surprised that my first year insurance with a claim to my name was ~£900!

Thanks!

It was worrying because about 2 minutes into the lesson I pulled onto a road which I thought was a 40mph road when it was actually a 30mph road. I got up to about 35mph before I began to think it was maybe the wrong speed. Then my examiner leaned over to check the speedo and that's when I twigged. I spent the remainder of the lesson wondering whether that incident was a major or a minor fail. Luckily, it was just a minor! The rest of the lesson was not too bad and I made just a couple of small mistakes. Because of the speeding they even gave me an eco driving brochure on how to use less fuel!

Good choice with the Focus. My son who is 21 only started driving this year, it turned out at one point to be cheaper for him to drive my 1.9 Audi A4 than a 1.2 Corsa.

He ended up with a Fiesta in the end as that was about the only one I felt comfortable shelling out money for. I didn't want him driving a French car if possible as we had nothing but constant chew with my daughter's Clio.

Yeah i like my focus - mine is a lot older and worn than yours and isn't as reliable any more, but it's a great car to drive, especially as your first car (this is my first car too).

Zetec is the best trim of these IMO if it has the comfort pack.

Hope I have done the right thing. :D

2004 1.6 Zetec with 50k miles for £2800.

I sit my test on tuesday so hopefully I haven't just bought a car that will sit in the driveway!

See, taking your time, having a look around, and it all works out in the end ;)

Good job on not getting shafted £2k on the insurance as well.

Is the comfort pack the one with aircon and the quickclear windscreen? Mine has aircon but no quick clear windscreen. I would have liked quickclear but it wasn't a dealbreaker for buying it.....

Just phoned the garage who have confirmed the car will be ready for me next Saturday to come pick up. It needed an MOT put on it and they were also going to change the cambelt. Gonna be a long wait till Saturday! :(

The garage is 40 miles from my house so it's gonna be a long first drive with my new car on fast roads. Still, should be a good chance to get to know the car.

You might want to invest in a subscription to ffoc.co.uk. It's only a tenner a year but the forum has some very handy how to's on fixing basic problems like the shifter spring snapping (£5 part. £90 to get it fitted), changing the speed sensor if it stops working etc etc.

also handy for part numbers and stuff.

I've let mine lapse but with the few problems I have with mine (see the thread) i might join up again for a tenner. Used to be 20 notes.

I love my 1.6 Zetec. Was my first car too :)
