I'm 22 and found out I have £2,000 in a fund which was set up when I was little boy. Now, the time has come to spend that money on my first car, but I've got no idea which car to get. Obviously I want one that does good milege to the gallon and is easy on the insurance.

I was thinking of a 1999, 1.1, 3rd Peugeot 206 lX. For a comprensive insurance quote comes out at around £1037 per year.

However, what would you guys recomend as a good first car?

*edit*

I'm also 6.5 tall, so it has to have good legroom.

Is your budget £2k?

206 is a very poor car with many flaws which make me hate them with a passion!

1.1? Any particular reason?

Low on insurance.

And yes my budget is pretty much 2k for the car. I don't mind spending around £1,000 to £1,500 on the car then the rest of the fund towards insurance.

I'm 21 with 0 no claims and I am paying that for a 1.4 206!!! That's a high quote I would say, although I have been on the road since 17.

I wouldn't touch the 206, especially for £2k. I'm 6ft and it's just about comfortable for me, but nobody can really sit behind me.

You're probably going to be looking at a Focus or Mondeo. You should be able to insure a 1.6 Focus, I wouldn't bother with the 1.4. There's also the 1.25 Fiesta.

I would recommend looking at the following:

Rover 25
Ford Mondeo Mk2
Ford Fiesta Mk4/Mk5
Mazda MX-5 1.6/1.8 Mk1 (Unsure on insurance cost)

I'd go for a rover 200, 1.4. Cheap insurance, cheap parts and you can pick them up cheap. I've had 2, just getting rid of my 2nd as I've got 2 years no claims and just bought a bmw 316i compact. My rovers have been belting little cars, good mpg.

hmm, as your so tall i would recommend a bigger car, and as much as i hate to say it you can pick up a tidy mondeo for £800-900 and the rest should cover your insurance.

At 22 i would imagine the insurance for a mondy wouldnt be that bad, obviously depending on NCB, experience etc.

The Rover is/was probably faster than that 316 you've just bought.
