First DSLR: 600d?

Again i think you a giving very misleading advice as in the real world the nifty 50mm is a highly thought of camera lens.

Agreed!! It's not an L series lens... but then again its not aimed at pro's.... i doubt the op would have many complaints with a 600D and 50mm lens

For the cost.
The actual lens sucks. I'v owned this lens, and spending £70 on a competitors nifty fifty is more than worth the additional cost.
Same with the 85 & 35...

As long as he doesn't experience anything else. My compact camera (rx100) would produce better files than the samples you have posted.

I'm very happy with my 600D - excellent camera.. the kit lens (18-55mm) is pretty decent for an actual kit lens - but the best advice would be to pick up a Canon EF 50mm F/1.8 prime lens (which you can get for around £60). On the 600D with it's APS-C - it's effectively an 80mm lens which produces very good results indeed (i..e ideal for daily snapping and portraits etc). In fact, I'd go as far to say that £ for £ I doubt there is a better lens/camera combo than the 600D and the EF 50mm lens.

It has the option of shooting in RAW and JPG at the same time.. and once you get comfortable shooting in RAW - then use a decent programme like Adobe Lightroom for your post processing.

Here's a couple of sample pics I took in Hong Kong recently:

EDIT: forgot to say that if you want to run custom firmware which improves a LOT on the stock features of the 600D - then it's also compatible with Magic Lantern - see here for info: http://magiclantern.wikia.com/wiki/Magic_Lantern_Firmware_Wiki

Hope this helps! :)

Impressive stuff. :D

Well I took the plunge and picked up the 600d with the kit lens and the 50mm f1.8. Have to say I'm loving it, only been using it around the house and mainly been playing with aperture and depth of field but I'm enjoying experimenting. I'll post with fest few efforts in the pics thread. Thanks for the advice guys

good choice!!! :)

I was fortunate enough to get mine in the summer so at least I had the garden to play in too but getting a DSLR for the first time is awesome :D Love my 650d hehe

So...

Although I have no plans of upgrading the lens for a while (down to funds but also as there is no reason I can't learn the basics with what I got), what would be the next logical upgrade assuming I wanted to keep the 18-55mm range?

Also... Batteries! Is the common wisdom to stick with Canon or are third parties any good?

And finally (for now at least)... Filters! Do I need a uv filter?

Upgrades.. depends on what type of photography you intend doing.. a DECENT tripod is always a good shout.. large/fast SD card is worth having, decent kit back, spare battery.. again flash (dependant on type of photography you'll be doing), remote (especially if you're going to do long exposure shots etc)

I've got an aftermarket SIDO battery and never had any problems with it..

Filters - I'd recommended to get a UV filter (decent one) if just for the protection alone!!.. if you plan on doing long exposure during daytime then a natural density (ND) filter is always a good filter to have in your bag..

Almost ALL pictures you take could benefit from a bit of post processing - so I'd recommend you look at a programme like Adobe Lightroom (if you've not got it already)

The book I mentioned earlier (Tom Ang - Digital Photography Masterclass is excellent and well worth a read as well!)

Hope this helps! :)

I too recently purchased the 600D and the 50mm 1.8.

I'm loving it! I'm a complete novice so I'll be buying the book mentioned (thanks to the member who suggested it!)

Would be keen to see some of your pics op!

Edit :

Is it this book?

The 50mm 1.8 is a good lens for the money, but I'm not sure how you'll get on with it, it's pretty long on a crop sensor.

I used the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 for a while before swapping to a Sigma 30mm f/1.4, much better focal range imo.
