First ever ssd

Yes but they were not even half as fast as the Vertex. The Trim tool that OCZ is working on will make the ocz remain faster while the samsungs like all ssd's will eventually write to every file degrading it's performance.
True, but it would be wrong to say samsung SSD's had stuttering problems, which is what i was commenting on.

I had a Samsung 120 SSD in my macbook, and upgraded it to the new 256 samsung ssd.

Not sure if the original SSD was one of these with the 90mb/s read write speeds. But I was more than happy with it, just needed the extra space is why I upgraded.

I tend to agree with what was said about Samsung, they probably dont want to manufacture drives which are flashable. They manufacture on such a large scale, if there was a problem, solving it before manufacture would be a lot easier than fixing it after.

Well you've chosen, but either way I think you wouldnt have been disappointed.

Much like Seagate's 7200.11 drives I suppose :p

You can flash those you know.......;)

Heh I guess that's half my point - even the big manufacturers ship drives with the ability to upgrade the firmware should the need arise.. complacency is a terrible thing!

I should really stop bitching about the Samsungs now, lol, I'm sure they're wonderful drives, I just prefer to have the option to make them better should the need arise.. :p

OP, I feel your pain, currently torn between the 60GB vertex and the 64gb sammy myself.

I read that anand article whihc has been mentioned, it seemed very pro-vertex, but also mentioned that the new samsungs are good too.

Sorry to thread hijack, but can somone give a rough idea of what trim is (all I know is it's good for ssd and is to do with letting the OS know it doesn't spin) and whether the current vertexes will support it. Even a good link would be appreciated.

well i i have had my samsung 64gig for 3 months now and has never stutterd, opperates perfectly well not even notice a windows slow down at all, over the 3 months ive had it in use.

IIRC it's basically this - when a file is changed, rather than actually changing the data on the drive, they just write the file to a blank block of space and change the "index". Eventually the drive runs out of blank areas and has to perform an erase operation on one of the old blocks before it can write the new data, which introduces a delay and affects performance.
The way TRIM is going to work in Windows 7 etc is still being sorted out, but OCZ's solution is a program you run manually every so often, that goes through and erases all the blocks with old data in, making performance good as new again for another few weeks.

The samsungs don't stutter. They've got 128MB cache onboard (Vertexes have 64)

I've not seen any proper benchmarks of the PB22-J's, but from what i have seen they are on par with Vertexes in sequential reads/writes, but Vertexes have the edge in IOPS.

New firmware is coming out all the time for Vertexes too, for feature and speed improvements but it's up to you whether you can be bothered to flash and reimage them.

For the price difference, I'd go Samsung at this point.

Click Here For a Review or Here for a comparison of the two.

Im another person that is practically restraining myself from getting either the Samsung or the Vertex. Im trying to resist as every time i buy anything the next day/week the price drops!!!

was just about to purchase the OCZ Vertex Series 120GB 2.5" SATA-II Solid State Hard Drive was reading the reviews and one person says that the jumper is not provided does any one no how can i update the drive without them or will it come updated to the latest firmwire?

I bought one last week and it was the latest firmware, 1.10 - so I'm sure you're safe. Even if you're not, you just have to bridge the connectors - piece of wire or foil will suffice.

I used a screwdriver to bridge the gap. worked like a charm.

i think i read somewhere that it was only the first few batches that diddn't come with a jumper, if you buy one now you should be ok

MMM, two Samsung 60GB drives or 3 X 30GB Vertex's - been given the green light from the misses so next pay day it's all on lol
