First foray into mobile phones in a while - Questions

How much do you end up saving going SIM only, really? The phone itself is still pretty expensive, and as far as I'm aware, with contracts where you get the phone for really cheap or free, you're getting quite a good deal, with the option to switch the phone for a better model in a year or so's time?

Since giffgaff is based on O2, does anyone know how good the coverage in the North-East is? Orange/T-Mobile is pretty decent up here, but not sure about O2.

Work it out...

The deal i linked above is £672 over 24 months

Giffgaff sim is £240 over 24 months + handset @ £420 = £660

£12 is hardly the biggest saving in the world :p In terms of upgrading, you can only do that at the end of the contract

It's depends what you get.
You have to do some basic calculations on the deals you find.

Not only did I save money, I'm not tied in. I initially purchased ip4 warranty replacment of eBay and signed upto Vodafone 30day contract. That was very port Internet so I moved to giffgaff and saved an extra £5 a month. Even on Vodafone it worked out cheaper.

But it's all very dependent on what you find, then how much your willing to spend not to be tied in.

Hmm... it seems being tied in is pretty negatively seen around here. Like I said, I know nothing when it comes to mobile networks (:p) so I guess I'll have to do some more digging, although finding out what to actually search for ends up being a bit daunting.

So you can only switch at the end? Huh, my brother told me you can switch after like 18 months of a 24 month contract or something like that.

As far as I can tell the best deal atm one of the top 3 T-Mobile contracts here . Pick the one which suits your usage.

Upfront cost £0
Cost per month (after cashback) £22.75
No of months 24
Additional Quidco cashback £27

Total cost £519.00

That's even better than buying the phone up front and using the cheapest sim only for 2 years.

For me on 3, I could upgrade after 21months but the new contract would be 24 months from the original contract end date. So 27 months in effect.

If you can afford to buy the handset outright it makes sense to do so for the flexibility. You can also ride the sell and upgrade wave if that's what you like.

But if £400 is a bit much to shell out in one go then there's nothing at all wrong with going the contract route

Ah, that makes sense. I can afford the handset right now, but plonking down that much on my first phone in forever would be bonkers... It makes more sense in my mind to go for the instalments with contracts. :p

Now that sounds pretty temping. Now to decide if I want 100 or 300 minutes.

Ive ended up getting the 1 plan for 31 quid a month, got all sorts of minutes and tethering options, idk - the phone was free so cant grumble, ill have the net on most of the time so it pays for itself in that sense.

Yeh the 1 Plan seems a great deal to me.
